Do what you want, no what others want you to do.

My mother didn't want me moving halfway across the country. I did it anyways, she got over herself.

I say do it, then blame her for your kids not having a grandmother. She'll get over it sooner or later.

Yeah.. just go ahead and do what you want, if she doesnt respect your decision then thats her problem, but she'll get over it. My mom doesnt want me to go to the Air Force, but im still going even if she'll disown me because its my dream and life choice. So she should respect what I choose to do.

Btw, tell her you support Bush.

Re: All i want for my birthday is...

Everybody has made good points but left one thing out. Even though you SHOULD do what you think is right, don't forget about your mom. Show her that her opinion is important to you. Keep telling her you want her to accept it before you leave. She'll remember how much her opinion meant to you after you leave; as opposed to remembering you walking around with a chip on your shoulder because you know you're right. Know what I mean?

Doing the right thing will come back to you.

Re: All i want for my birthday is...

Do what yu want to do. But in defense for the parents, you have to think logically about it. If it is not in your best interest to go then why go? Like for instance, join just to get away? Running away from problems won't help. They will find you quickly in the military and be worse. Are you mentally ready? Can you live a strict and orderly lifestyle for the time you sign up? Are you willing to have a 24/7 schedule at all times? Don't let the movies or video games portray what the military really is. You have to realize that it is not just school, money and benefits. You have a job to perform to the best of your ability. It doesn't matter how old you are. Once you get out of bootcamp you will look at the world and realize wow! Is society really that oblivious to how one would look or act? Then you will think to yourself yes....I am a professional now.

To all of you who want to join, good luck on whatever branch of the military you join. Sleep now.......you will need it later . Why? The military doesn't pay you to sleep. Depending on what needs to be done, you may have periods of time where you won't see sleep for almost 2 whole days.(and even longer) Seriously. Join the branch that can best suit your abilities for what you want to do. Don't think you won't go to iraq sometime, don't join the navy to be a s.e.a.l. or ride in a sub and be crushed that you didn't make it. There are no tricks to it. That is for any branch.

I could go on forever about this stuff but I will leave it at that. I have to be up and ready to work in 5 hours.

Re: All i want for my birthday is...

People thought they were safe in the Navy Reserves, but they find ways to mobilize you by putting you in Mobile Expedentiary Units, basically they retrain you to be a soldier....you are meeting the needs of the Navy first, or army or whatever, not your own...trust me when you finally get in the military (or the Navy in my case)..you'll know what you're made of, just make sure that the M.O.S. or Rating that you choose is something you can do for 18 hours a day....one of my buddies is a seabee (Naval construction worker) and he does barely any construction work and was assigned to a Marine Military Police unit...he had some say in the matter but i'm sure it would've happened anyway...

and as far as your mother goes...why wouldn't she be proud that her son was a Soldier, Sailor, or Airman? Even if she hates bush with a passion, the fact that you took the initiative to take that step fully knowing that you may not make it to your 19th birthday says alot....

It would be cool to have a fellow sailor on the board...*hint *hint
