loose shifter??

I just got a 98 forester 5spd with a loose shifter. It seems to shift fine, but in gear the shifter moves all over the place. I talked to the dealer and they said it was a bad bushing. I talked to a repair shop and they said a bearing in the gearbox was bad and the synchro could go soon. I don't know if I trust either of them... small town in Hawaii kinda guys. Any advise would be great. Thanks.
