Timing Belt problem - engine stopped turning

I'm in the process of changing the timing belt. The crank pulley came off after a lot of swearing (crank WAS spinning freely). There were some pops while trying to break the bolt loose and the the bolt came off. Now, when I try to turn the engine by hand, it only goes so far either direction and locks up. I think the pops were the timing belt jumping. I'm not sure what to do at this point. I can't line up the timing marks to move forward with installation (using VFAQ write up). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Timing Belt problem - engine stopped turning

Ok. Crankshaft turns with a wrench but gets really stiff at points. I'm trying to line up the timing marks but can only get three. I'm going to post some pics as soon as I get them on my computer and online. The marks on the two camshaft sprockets and the oil pump sprocket line up. The instructions say there is a mark on the crankshaft sprocket that I need to line up as well but I don't see it. Not Also the mark on the tensioner pulley does not line up with anything nor do I recognize a mark where it should line up.

I'm still in the process of removing the old belt. I haven't even begun to explore putting on the new belt. Please help!

Pics as promised. If you look at the vfaq, it mentions the camshaft timing marks, the oil pulley timing mark and the crankshaft timing marks. I cannot figure out what the crankshaft timing mark looks like or where it needs to line up.

When the crank is hard to turn over, that's when the compression stroke is happening. In reality, you're trying to compress all that air by hand, which isn't an easy task unless you use a wrench.

I'll get some pics of my engine tonight of where my sprockets line up and what not. It's hard to see from the angle of your pictures.

It will make it somewhat easier, but there will still be resistance. Just don't get the wrong idea that taking the spark plugs out should make it turnable with one finger.
