2004 explorer limited

I have a 2004 explorer limited with less than $65K miles. I noticed that i began having problem shifting and would hesitate when trying to go into overdrive. Then on 5/12/06 when putting into reverser it jumped into reverse and made a loud noise. I immediately called the delear where i purchsed it and was told to take to it to another local dealer. I took the vehicle in that morning and it was diagnosed with Solonoid problems while the keys were still in my possession and the car was in the parking lot. I was also told the amount the repairs would cost me. (all of this before the car as on the lift.)
There have been no recalls however my dealer did acknowoledge that all program cars they had in their possession at one time had a procedure done to them to avoid this problem but all other vehciles that had been purchased were not recalled for this fix. I have requested reimbursement for my $996.00 out of pocket expenses incurred since no warranty covered the problem.

Has anyone else in the Richmond, VA area run into the same issues?
