Fuel Guage 92 GV

I hope im not out of line here but my wife owns a 92 Grand Voyager, 3.3, auto, power locks and windows. The problem is the fuel guage. Sometimes at startup the low fuel light will come on and the guage will read empty even with a full tank. Other times while driving down the hiway everything is fine then all of a sudden the low fuel light will come on and the guage drops to empty, even with a full tank. Then sometimes the light goes off and the guage returns to normal.... A Short?? Where do I start trying to find and fix this royal pain?
Thank You.

When I said I hoped I wouldnt get in trouble, I meant by putting this post out by itself as I didnt see any others like it.... Now I assume that finding a starting place is wherever I think I should start.... Thanks.

stapletonr - You're not alone. Mine's been doing that off and on for a year. Nothing to do but either live with it or change the sending unit.

Re: Fuel Guage 92 GV

Do to some poorer quality gases sulfur deposits can build up on the sensor and cause erratic readings you can sometimes use a good gas additive to fix this . I would try running soemthing like Techron thru a couple of tanks and see what happens , if that doesn't then replacement of the pump an sensor is proabbly required . Thank you all very much. At least the tank should be easy to drop.

Re: Fuel Guage 92 GV

Would it be a correct assumption that there is no access without dropping the tank?

OK so I replaced the pump, not easy but got it done. Fuel gauge still not working. Is there a relay or something under the dash that could be at fault?

Re: Fuel Guage 92 GV

Oh no! I'm pretty sure the fuel gauge sending unit is seperate from the pump. If you didn't you need to change the sending unit as stated. I hope you goofed and said pump instead of sending unit.

Look here: http://www.makeitmopar.com/ They want $61.

Re: Fuel Guage 92 GV

Well I found out that the sending unit is seperate however it is connected to the pump and now both are brand new. I also found out that if I bump, OK smack, the dash to the right and below the steering column the gauge works. This is in the area of a computer? ECM? Two plug ins, both multi wire, one blue and one white. Small metal box....Could this be the problem? What exactly is this box and can it be replaced with one from a wrecking yard? Im willing to try just about anything short of taking it to the dealer.....Ok since nobody will answer that part how about this...Is there a relay dedicated to the fuel gauge? If yes where might it be located?

Re: Fuel Guage 92 GV

I still think its a sending unit or the connection to the sending unit.

Re: Fuel Guage 92 GV

Well I will drop the tank again, as soon as its low enough on gas, and check the connections to see if I have them where they belong and correctly. Thank You

Re: Fuel Guage 92 GV

does any other guage on the dash act up as well?If so there are usually bad solder joints on the board that need to be re-soldered.

Re: Fuel Guage 92 GV

No sir. Thhere are just two gauges, fuel and temp. The fuel gauge is the only one that doesnt work. Like I have said, it has a new fuel pump/sending unit.
