2000 hesitating/stalling with low fuel

I recently got down to 1/8 of a tank and it started hesitating and then stalled just like it had run out of gas. Actually happened once before, but I was able to make to the station before it quit. I confess (no flamers, please) that I often run low on gas, OK? I'm wondering if it could be the fuel filter and, if so, where that is so I can change it or look at it.

you might have burnt out your pump. i know that it only takes a couple seconds without gas for them to be shot.
