Rubbing Noise When Turning

Have a rubbing/slipping noise when I turn tight, but sometimes it does it at half turn. Dealer said differentials need to be lubed ($280) for front and rear. Well that didn't do it and the problem persists. BTW its a 2002 Overland All Wheel Drive. Now have 45,500 miles on it and a little worried about towing a trailer acress the country.

Any ideas what it might be?

Changing the diff fluid, especially the front, to fix a rub/slipp noise seems like a scam to me. The rear might be applicable if it is a limited slip type. Not a bad thing to change the diff oil about now anyway tho - but not for that reason.....

Which transfer case do you have? If you have the Quadra Trac II, some slipping at the tire/pavement is normal and the Viscous couplers in those seem fairly reliable.

Does the problem happen when the vehicle is cold, right after startup or after you have driven for a while??

If it happens when warm/hot and you can feel a kind of power hop when turning, it might be the VC. Also that particular transfer case takes a special fluid - if I remember right...

Usually warm. Need to go to the Jeep to see the actual 4wd. It's the only set up for the 2002 Overland HO V8.

Thanks

Re: Rubbing Noise When Turning

I have the same problem. Below is a link to a post that goes over the problem and has a great link that shows you exacty how to replace the VC.

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=544516

Hope this helps. By the way, the link begins with switching from a Quadratrac to a Selectrac. But just scroll down to get to the VC info.

Dave

Thanks for the info. Looking forward to eliminating the problem before it becomes a bigger one.

Re: Rubbing Noise When Turning

Well your probably right about the VC. Lease is up in Aug and I'm turning it in and not going to pay to fix first. Dealer has already charged me to fix the problem and it isn't fixed. Sucks to be the person guy to buy it.

Re: Rubbing Noise When Turning

This may be too simple but, have you thought about the power steering ? Many different cars will at times cause a rubbing sound when turning all the way in a direction. When it starts to make sound next time, turn back towards straight a little and see if it stops, then turn all the way again and listen to hear if it does it again. If so it may be a loose belt or fluid.

Good suggestion! The dealer thought the same thing and replaced a power steering pump for almost $600.00. I got a little ticked but held my cool and the covered it for me on a courtesy warranty for a $50.00 deductable.
