Dropping Fuel Tank?

What is the minimum that needs to be done to drop the fuel tank in a 3rd gen? I want to put an aftermarket fuel pump in and need to figure out if I should try doing it myself or take it to a garage and work on it there. I do not want to cut any holes in the car either. Thank you.

You have to drop your exhaust, whole rear end and finally have your car up high enough so that the tank is able to fall down nicely and be pulled out.

you need to take down the heat shields, then the subframe connector thing that is attached to the differential, then the straps holding the tank up, then you gotta fight to get the tank out.. thats probably the hardest part cause the filler neck gets stuck. it does not drop right out.. to make it easier, you should probably have somebody to help you out so they can manuever the tank under the car while you try to get the damn neck unstuck.

Thanks guys. My Chilton's is very vague on the fuel tank removal (actually it has served me no purpose except for torque specs as it does not even have a wiring diagram for my specific car.... not worth much, LOL). It sounds like alot of you have had the pleasure of doing this once or twice. Sounds like this is gonna be a fun job......

well known for cracking isnt it? or was that just a recall part for the 91s?

That's odd, atleast mine made a little pad for my head and padded the tank when decided it was ready to come down.

or you can pull a few back panels out pull the carpet up and cut a hole in the metal to get to it

Not really so ghetto when..

1. it saves ALOT of time
2. Stops you from getting a major headache
3. Makes it seriously easier to get it out and back in

And no it doesnt go kaboom.. you're not cutting the gas tank itself.

Yeah but when tell some yahoo (not you dk05) that cutting the trunk is the way to go and they use a damn sawzall with a 10" blade when there's 2" tops clearence between the floor and tank, well you do the math.

Cutting IS ghetto. And especially on a car that has inherant structural integrity from the day it rolled off the line.

LOL... I know it saves a lot of time but I doubt I will have to change the pump more than once. It seems like I am working on the car alot more than I am driving it. Not only that but the car only has 54,000 on it and I hate to ruin it by cutting holes just to save time. Actually that is the reason I don't like taking my car to shops because alot of them will just cut and pry and do whatever they can to save time then charge for the normal time.
