3rd generation Firebirds had a V6 as standard, but you could get an optional V8. In 1991 the 305 TPI 215hp and 285tq. Not too bad of an engine when combined with the 5-speed.
Give me the 8th digit of your VIN and I'll tell you what engine you have.

.
When Firebird is said some people automatically think V6. I don't know why anyone would care to talk about a V6 Firebird, I usually take it as they are talking about a Trans Am or Formula. The car isn't just called a Trans Am, its a Firebird Trans Am, Firebird Formula.
Anyways back to the subject. A 305 is usually a V8, thats what came in some of the earlier Iroc Z28's and the later RS 3rd gen Camaro's. |

305 indicates the amount of horsepower you have, and a firebird with 305 horse power is more than likely a v8, cuz v6 firebirds have 200 horse power.

305 has absolutely nothing to do with the horsepower. There were two possible V8's that could be put into third gens, the 305 and the 350. Those are the cubic inches of the motors.
If there's any question, pop the hood and start counting spark plugs

Are all 305's in the formula's throttle body injection like the 305's in the RS camaro??

listen to blkcamaross i have seen him on alot of posts and he knows what he is talking about. also a 305 is the cubic inches and has nothing to do with horsepower like
firebirdfan86 says. if it was a v6 it would be a 3.1 Liter or 181 cubic inches. the top would say 3.1L or 3100 but yours is a V8. some people put the ratings of it above but that is only true if it is also an engine from 1991. if it is older it is a little less. for the 305's the horsepower gradualy went up from 145 in 1982 to about 215hp in 1992. i would say subtract about 7hp per year going backwards from 1992, and they didn't put 305's in firebirds in 1993 and up but they did put them in other cars like a chevy caprice and other big cars of chevy/pontiac/oldsmobile and i think they stayed around 215hp after 1992. if the engine is fuel injected it is the amount of hp i mentioned above, but if it is carberated, it is also less hp. by the way for you who are looking for the horsepower of a 3.1L V6 it is 145@5200rpm an 170ft-Lbs of torque.
