Horrible paint problem :-(
Hi guys!
I wanted to paint my 3000GT with a firepearl fiji blue by Cobra Colors. I apply the black magic primer, which was smooth. After that, I put 2-3 mists coats, everything was okay. Now, I applied 2 heavier coats and look at the result :-( ![]() How can I fix this? This sucks, I only have 1 ounce of paint left. Is it enough to paint a body? The paint is perfect on the spoiler and the mirrors, but on the body, this is what happen. Is this orange peel? Or something stranger? What is strange is that when I touch the surface, it's not rough, it's smooth. It's like if the problem in behind the paint. Thanks for your help |

Re: Horrible paint problem :-(
OK, how did you wind up with one ounce left? Did you already apply half of this paint on another body?
If you sprayed out 1+ oz of paint already on this body in two heavy coats, that's where you're problem is. You're spraying too thick, too heavy, and too fast. If this is an ounce or so of paint, and it feels smooth to the touch, may mean that the pearl elements in the paint are not laying flat in on the surface, but are remaining suspended in the thick coat of carrier. The carrier dries in a realitively thick layer (but with a level surface), with the pearls still in suspension, and that's what's causing the textured look. Lately, when I do a body with a Cobra Colors metallic, I use between 1/2 and 1/4 of the bottle in about 8 wet coats. If a bottle is 2.5 oz, I'm using aboutn 1/2 to 1 oz per body. So yes, 1 oz is plenty to do a body- but you really need to properly thin it. With laquers you can reduce the paint waaaay down- past milk, almost to water. The solvants evaporate quickly when spraying, so it doesn't run quite as readily as acrylics or enamels- and as a result, it goes on in a very thin, very even layer.

Re: Horrible paint problem :-(
Cobra Colors need to be thinned more, even though they come pre-thinned. I did this when I used the Lamborghini Orange pearl. I shot like 5-6 coats before I got my desired color. Be patient!

Re: Horrible paint problem :-(
Looks like solvent pop , too much paint on each coat and the second coat was probably applied too quickly.

Re: Horrible paint problem :-(
That’s crazing with some mottling. You sprayed too thickly from the looks of it, or you used the wrong thinner or not enough, or you were simply too close to the surface. Could have also been too cold, the solvents in the clear carrier have basically reacted against the pigment /pearl. I know, as I’ve tried to replicate many paint problems, so I can learn, and I sprayed lacquer too thick and got this very result. I did it with some spare red pearl I had with a Nissan 300Zx I built. It bubbled as well, made a right mess.
Whatever, I think this is time to strip, sorry mate. |

Re: Horrible paint problem :-(
Ok thanks guys,
What is the best way to strip this kind of paint? I think CSC is not good on this right? I still have between 1 and 1.5 ounces left, I think I will be able to do a not bad paint job time. How much and what type of thinner should I put in? Don't know if I can find PPG thinner where I live... Thanks! |

Re: Horrible paint problem :-(
Well, it's pretty easy to look and see:
http://www.ppg.com/cr-refinish/phase...istributor.asp For stripping, can you get 99% isopropyl alcohol?

Re: Horrible paint problem :-(
Yes, I have a bottle of 99% isopropyl alcohol, gonna try this right now.
Thanks for the ppg website, never tought to check there :-S Just found a place near I live where they got PPG paint. So the only thing I ask them is a quart of PPG thinner? |

Re: Horrible paint problem :-(
Get a can if PPG DTL-105. Get a quart if you can, but they may not have quarts. I had to get a gallon- but it's well worth it.
By the way, Leon has alot of really good information on his site. You can probably manage to save yourself alot in the way of future headaches, and quicken your learning curve by reading it.

Re: Horrible paint problem :-(
Thanks for the info.
Yeah I read tutorials on Leon's site and I will use them in the future. Hope my next paint job will be better. My first one with Cobra Colors end up well, but this one was horrible. Maybe I didn't wait enough between two coats or I was too much in a hurry. |

The isopropyl will probably strip back the primer also. That means you get to re-prime. One of the cool things about Black Magic is that you can thin it with the same PPG thinner. Do so. It will be an entirely different painting experince. When properly thinned, primer won't bump up like it does when it's too thick- and believe me, out of the jar, it's too thick. Play with it, and see how thin you can use it. If you just spray it in thin coats, you can reduce it waaaay back without running- and that's the key. You want to reduce it as much as possible without running. Once you've gotten a feel for it with the primer, move on the the paint. Same thing, reduce it as much as possible without running- and with laquers, that's pretty thin. Follow Leon's guidelines for how long between coats, and you'll have no troubles.

Re: Horrible paint problem :-(
Thanks again, gonna do that.
I think I put too much primer, when I look at my jar, there is only 2 ounces left, so I put 2 ounces in 3-4 coats, maybe this was the problem. When you say I can thin it a lot, do you mean something like 10 paint:1 thinner or almost a 1:1 ratio? Yeah I know that it's not always the same and that I have to try it, but it's just to have an idea. Thanks, you really helped me out! |

Re: Horrible paint problem :-(
More like 1:1, sometimes even beyond that- especially with clearcoat. 1:1 is the ratio I generally start with, and often I will add a bit more thinner as I spray. Your milage may very but I almost never spray below 1.5:1, and that only for a first coat of primer. CobraColors starts to get very economical when thinned properly.

Re: Horrible paint problem :-(
Thanks a lot!
Yeah, I love those colors, too bad they are so hard to get for me since I live in Canada, I can only buy them when my father goes to USA and this is one or two times in a year. So I miss every limited time colors :-( |
