A different way to clean the grease and dirt off....
My wife's car sprung a leak in the cooling system. Nothing major, but it coated the rear of the block and the transmission with a combination of oil and anitfreeze (the oil is from a small leak in the valve cover cam shaft pass-through for the distributor, also at the rear of the engine!).
After I fixed the antifreeze leak, I had two choices. I could take the car to the local wand wash and huff-puff it down, or I could remove the majority of the mess with the garden hose.
As an after thought, I decided to grab the 'Shout' (stain remover for clothes) from our laundry room and try that on the greasy mess. The container is a generous 4 liters and comes with a remote spray head attached to the container with a clear piece of tubing.
So, I sprayed all of the areas I wanted to clean being careful to avoid the electrical junction boxes and alternator and let it sit for 15 minutes on a warm engine.
Grabbed the garden hose, washed it down and presto, clean engine for about $0.25. Even removed some of the baked on stuff too.
