40% of women experienced abuse in intimate relationships
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060517/ts_nm/abuse_dc_2
I can't help but wonder if this study was funded in part by any women's groups. How the hell does one define "psychological abuse"? Flat out physical abuse needs little definition, obviously. But I would think just as many males experience what they would deem "psychological abuse" from their female companions. Unfortunately, it seems this would be unavoidable in a society where both mom and dad have to work fulltime jobs, AND balance rising expenses, AND keep after their children's care, AND keep abreast of a faster paced increasingly technological society, AND deal with everyone else who's dealing with the exact same things -- and then on top of all that keep their personal relationship healthy and productive. I'm of the opinion that there is just plain more "psychological abuse" going around between EVERYONE. Period. Unfortunately, it just so happens that the only time of day people are finding they have free to unburden themselves, is the precious little time they have when in the privacy of their homes -- logically accompanied by their spouse/children.

Re: 40% of women experienced abuse in intimate relationships
Bullshit.
Being a married man, I guarantee you that these women are counting fights, where both parties are handing out equal abuse, or even where the female was the louder party, as 'abuse' towards them, since it's "always the guy's fault". A good example is my in-laws. My MIL thinks that she's being abused, because my FIL witholds money from her, although she's the one abusing his trust and money, by gambling and talking to many other guys online. My wife agrees. In this survey, I am POSITIVE that my MIL will respond, saying that she's 'abused'.

I'm sure that 40% of men have probably recieved abuse from women if the same standards are held to them.

Re: 40% of women experienced abuse in intimate relationships
![]() Definately funded by some dyke-ass lesbian women rights group, no doubt about it. I'd like to know what exactly they define this "abuse" as? Let me guess if it were brought up about the percentage of men, 18-55, who were abused in their intimate relationships it would be that it can't happen to men. I bet women psychologically abuse men far more than men do to women. I'd put big money on that too.

Re: 40% of women experienced abuse in intimate relationships
This explains it: "More than 40% of women surveyed in the SEATTLE area reported they had been physically or psychologically abused."
Yeah, I agree we need to call bullshit on that study. It's hardly representative of the US on the whole. Everybody's a friggin' victim. |

More of the 'I'm a victim' mentality sweeping the nation.

Not the only place its happening. The really sad thing about these sorts of bullshit statistic is they cover the real statistics. Its probably not typical but 20% of my ex-girlfriends had suffered some kind of sexual abuse. And it is deffinitly a problem, here in NZ it occurs a lot in the lower socio-economic groups, and is often easily ignore. Domestic abuse is the second more reported crime next to car left. Its a problem that needs a lot more effort into solving, unforutunatly that will never happen is people can't take it seriously, and this thread shows that people don't take such stupid statistics seriously.

I don't think it's so much that we don't take it seriously (obviously abuse is a serious thing) it's more that we're questioning the parameters of this study. Something like "psychological abuse" can be a pretty damn subjective term. As I noted initially, we all experience "psychological abuse" every day -- on the job, in the car, on the street, etc. And how many males experience what they would deem "psychological abuse" from their female counterparts? Women can become downright nasty under the proper circumstances. Again, I don't think it's such that the objectors in this thread are questioning the existence or prevalence of abuse, so much as they are the parameters for a study like this one. For instance: what is the story behind this "Seattle health maintenance organization" referenced as the source of the numbers in this article? And what would happen if this survey was extrapolated to include the entire country? Isn't it conceivable that instances of abuse may be higher in some areas, and lower in others? It just seems rather short-sighted to apply the figures from the survey of one group, under one organization, in one part of the country to the entire country in general.

Re: 40% of women experienced abuse in intimate relationships
I agree w/ teng on that one. I don't doubt for an instant that abuse does occur, and that we need to take it seriously.
We all know that stats can be manipulated to achieve desired goals. It's been long observed that the Seattle area is prone to more mental health issues and other behavioral problems, due in part to the climate (lack of sunshine most days). I also think it's a common reaction to label anyone who disagrees with those studies as uncaring and unconcerned. It's an oft-used tactic to cast doubt upon the credibility of anyone who would dare to suggest the study is flawed or lacking in some way. |

Re: 40% of women experienced abuse in intimate relationships
Well I guess I've been abused by all the girls I dated in the past that played mind games on me? Or is it not abuse b/c I was to intelligent to pick up on it?
