98 Blazer transfer case encoder motor

Has any one replaced the transfer case encoder motor for a 98 Blazer with the transfer case still in the vehicle? I have a used one that I want to swap, but there is no clearance to remove the motor. Incedently after loosing up the old one - it started working again.

Re: 98 Blazer transfer case encoder motor

I have never heard of removing the transfer case to change the encoder motor. Is it an auto trac? Even still once the encoder motor is loose turn it so the top side is down then slide it out at a right angle. I've hade to do it a couple of times on my 98'. My problem ended up being the TCCM. From what I understand the encoder motor rarely fails. To test while the 4hi is trying to engauge tap the black motor part with a hammer. Remember I said TAP! to see if it will enguage. If it does enguage, the next componet is the actuator under the battery or the vaccum line that runs to it. Lots of luck!!!!

Re: 98 Blazer transfer case encoder motor

Sorry I didn't the last of your post. That sounds more like a connector problem or it could be a failing motor. A failing TCCM would also cause this problem. Have you had the dash off or replaced the heater core? I can't quite remember is the front driveshaft in the way?
