Re: How do I disable power steering

You could disconnect the lines but then you have to seal them up so all teh fluid doesn't come out and burn up you pump. Not really worth the trouble

Or just bypass the power steering pump's pulley.

BTW, this is a horrible idea. Your steering is geared to be assisted by hydraulics, you'll be in a for a rude surprise when you try to turn, especially anything over 1/4 of a turn. Trust me, I've had a belt snap while taking a turn....not fun.

Re: How do I disable power steering

Power steering that loses power assist is FAR harder to turn than manual steering with no assist. The steering ratio is faster with the PS too,and that increases effort when it loses assist. As for swapping to manual rack(if you were thinking about that),NO 1995-2005 Cavalier came with manual steering.I doubt that any 82-94 came with manual either.(even the cheapo 82 "Cadet" models).

Re: How do I disable power steering

There are a very VERY small number of J-Bodies that came w/o power steering, but they do exist. You'll have one hell of a time finding one, though as I do believe they were only around for the first couple years of J-Body production.

Re: How do I disable power steering

please dont tell me you wanna do this to free up extra horsepower, and like 94vl said, a car with disconnected power steering turns WAY harder then a car that just doesnt have power steering

Re: How do I disable power steering

how about this, find yourself a nice empty parking lot, get going to like 25 MPH, then just turn the car off and try to turn. Remember your brakes wont work very well either.

Re: How do I disable power steering

It all depends on the car, really...i drove an old Jeep CJ 3spd w/o power steering and it was fine, just had to turn the wheel A LOT and i made the mistake of tryin to make a U-turn into oncoming traffic...i apparently wanted to do a little off-roading...haha

Hondas are set up differently and most of the time those who remove power steering are those who have done other mods to the car to make it easier for them to turn the wheel w/o power steering.
