Power and proformance upgrade for 1997 4runner & manufactures manual

im looking to increase my spead and mucsle on my 1997 4-runner. ive already got it a K & N air filter, is there anything else that really works on increaseing your speed? im also looking for a manual book on my 4 runner so i can take care of some rust issues before they get to be a problum.

Re: Power and proformance upgrade for 1997 4runner & manufactures manual

What motor is in your runner?
What "speed" are trying to increase, from a stop, acceleration, or top end freeway?

Keeping it tuned and timed will return the best results. Your K&N filter is a HIGH MAINTENANCE job you MUST keep it cleaned. Do a search on this forum for the filter and yo will be surprised as to the results.

What you need for the rust procedure is any GOOD generic body shop how to manual they will cover in more detail what you are looking for. The service manuals dont have the space to go into detail that is very useful.

Re: Power and proformance upgrade for 1997 4runner & manufactures manual

Do an internet search about the V6 and K&N performance results.
I found les performance as the design restricts air flow due to the rubber disc in the center.
Try running with no filter for a short test drive and see if you notice any difference. Then try a clean paper filter.

The "open" K&N filters is where the gains are made but wont fit the 4Runners in stock configurations, assuming you used the "drop in" filter replacement.

The more frequent attention is due to the small filter and location of the intake my paper elements have become plugged within months of summer driving in the mountains.

There are many posts and some in Brians sticky about performance improvements.
Keep in mind the 4Runner is a "Fat Car" and is known to be sluggish and a gas hog.
I am looking to buy a VW to drive for my summer vacation. Soley because of the oil companies GREED!

Re: Power and proformance upgrade for 1997 4runner & manufactures manual

I just did a search on Google for "auto body repair book" and got OVER12, 800,000 hits they're out there.
I don't have one I recommend but ask at the parts store or even a "friendly" body shop tell them you want to spend a lot of time on rust removal and they might give you some ideas in what is a good book to start with.
There really isn't any way for them to make any profit on fixing rusted out panels well it quickly exceeds the cost of the older vehicles. So no one would want to spend it.
Google searc results:

Nothing beats a supercharger. Check out Gadget's 4-Runner in the following link. He has alot of information on performance. He is also not a fan of K&N - as you will read.
