Definite fix for stalling while braking?

I recently inherited a '94 Z24 and as a bonus it came with "features" such as brakes surging at low speeds then occasionally stalling once i come to a complete stop. I did a search for "stalling", "rough idle" etc. Alot of suggestions ranging from Iac, Tcc, coil packs, plugs, wires, fuel pump, filters, abs sensors, "that time of the month" etc etc. One thing i have noticed, only on the highway, is that putting it in neutral while braking seems to keep it from stalling which would suggest Tcc as the culprit. As far as a temporary solution in parking lots, and congestied traffic goes I'm S.o.L. Also when i restart it acts like the timing is retarded or the starters hanging. Anyways I'm asking for people who have gotten to the root of this problem to please post what the cause was so i can best determin the steps to take as money is kinda an issue.

Re: Definite fix for stalling while braking?

well. i had a TCC problem. it came out of nowhere. One day i was driving along the highway and i came to a red light. As i was braking, the engine started running rough. I didnt think much of it. As i began to go, the car sputtered really hard and then died. After a while i was able to get going again. Didnt have the problem again for a while. A month later i was driving around the city, came to a stop sign, and then i had the same problem. I was forced to put it in neutral and coast through the stop sign and pull off onto a side steet, otherwise i would have been forced to get out and push. It seemed as if the car wasnt downshifting. It was getting stuck into 3rd gear. I replaced the tcc solenoid with one from a scrap yard, and the problem got worse. I then bought a brand new one, and the problem was solved.
Also. people say if it is the tcc solenoid, you should be able to start the car up after it stalls. I found i had to wait quite a while, because the solenoid would get locked up.

You could try unplugging the solenoid and seeing if it solves your problem. Just look for the blue or white 4 plug connector on the trans. It will give you poor gas mileage though, so do not drive without it for long.

Brakes surging at low speeds could be the rotors. Many problems with warped rotors on cavaliers.
Rough idle could also lead to the egr valve.
And maybe change the fuel filter.

thats all i could think of

Re: Definite fix for stalling while braking?

I had the same problem with an 89 Z-24.Rough idling under braking or even deceleration. Come to find out because I replaced the throttle position sensor the computer needed to "learn" the new sensors position. So if your interested here goes. Set your parking brake(I didnt have a working one so I used a tree) and chock the wheels.Disconnect the battery for one minute and then re-connect. Start the car and put in drive and let it idle until the cooling fan turns on then off. After that shut the car off for five minutes restart the car and let idle in drive again for five minutes. Make sure the air and rear window defogger is off.Dont touch the throttle or steering wheel while doing this. If you do you must restart at "disconnect battery". If it dies in the process restart car and put back in drive. This solved my problem maybe it will help with yours.
