Decal edges on complex corners... HELP!

I'm having trouble getting the edges of some of the decals on the CLK I'm doing to stick, because they wrap around complex corners. This is especially true on the wheel-wells and the hood, around the headlamps and grille.

Any ideas on how to get them to stick?

Re: Decal edges on complex corners... HELP!

Have you tried using some MicroSol on them at all?
If not it's probably worth getting a bottle, if I understand your problem correctly.

+1 for microsol.

or, you can actually use a warm damp towel and use it to press on the decal, making it conform to the surface, like in http://tamiya.com/english/howto/car1/tip5.htm

Re: Decal edges on complex corners... HELP!

I have MicroSet, and I'm literally painting the decals in the stuff.

Try a hot damp cloth pressed firmly over decal. Also if its lifting try some white glue under the decal. The cloth works instantly and leaves no wrinkles.

Microsol is much much stronger than Microset. Buy a bottle and you will notice the difference. No matter how much microset you put on, the decal will not conform.

You can also try Solvaset. This is much stronger than Microsol from my reading in this forum. I personally have not used it.

Microsol will almost "melt" the decal and make it conform to any shape. The decal will stick very well afterwards.

Re: Decal edges on complex corners... HELP!

You could always use vinegar diluted in water.. That’s basically what mico sol is. In fact the two products are pretty much the same, just that one is stronger then the other. Microscale seem to have marketed the two pretty well, saying you need both, whereas you don’t actually. Some decals will melt around the edges with just micro set. Whereas some need a little more, Tamiya decals are well known for being pancakes.. Whereas I’ve just used some Crazy modeler decals, and these registered to the surface superbly, and just needed pressing into place with a damp finger. I still applied micro sol AFTER they were in place, as sol does melt the decal, and is great if you are to apply a clear coat afterwards.

Hot towel works quicker and even faster with a hairdryer, but you need to use this on low heat, or else it can warp the plastic.

Re: Decal edges on complex corners... HELP!

"Once you've used DACO's Decalsetting, you'll never use Microscales Sol & Set ever again ..."

From their website. Thats a pretty bold claim, it doesn't come anymore "this is better" then a statement such as this..!! That good eh...!!? Must admit, first I've heard of this decal setting solution. Learn something new everyday. Everyday's school day.

Re: Decal edges on complex corners... HELP!

solvaset works great. ive personally never used microsol, but ive heard its good.
you need to be careful with solvaset and small decals, as if you use too much, it may actually disolve the decal.
