Backspacing

Hello,

I've done a lot of research into new wheels and I have decided on some 15x8's. The only problem is that I have read a lot about backspacing... although I dont really understand what it is. I'm under the impression its how deep the wheel dish is... does that make sense?

Basically, for an 06 SE 4cyl without a lift. Will 15x8's cause any problems?

also

What kind of backspacing should I go for, 4in or 4.5in?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Backspacing

I run 3.75" BS. I wouldn't even consider going more than 4" max.

A few pics of my Jeep. I have 33x12.5x15" BFG MT KMs on 15x8 wheels with 3.75" BS. (I also have 6" Warn Flares.)

Backspacing is the distance from the inside edge of the wheel to the hub mounting surface of the wheel.
Stock Jeep wheels have 5.25" of backspacing for 7" wide wheels and 5.5" for 8" wheels.
You dont say what size tire you plan to run. I wouldnt go with an 8' wheel with anything less than a 10.5" wide tire. A 9.5" wide tire would be ok but would fit a 7" wheel better. If you are staying with stock size tires, go with a 7" wheel as close to stock BS as possible. If you are going with a 10.5" wide tire, go with the 8" wheel with 4.5" BS

Re: Backspacing

OIIIIIIIO,
3.75 is good for 12.5" wide tires under those wide flares but the SE has narrower flares and hes stock. Dont you think thats to little BS for small tires on a stock SE?

3.75" BS on the wheels and say 31x10.5x15 tires and he is going to have his tries sticking out about 1/2" on each side.

Itll be a little more than that. My wifes TJ has 4.5" BS on 8" wheels with 31X10.50s. The tread stuck out about .75" with Sport flares. I had to put Sahara flares on to pass inspection.
With 3.75" BS and 10.50" tires, they would probably stick out more like 1.5" past the flares.

It probably doesnt matter in NM but WV are pricks when it comes to the yearly inspection. In NM its probably just about personal preference. Personally, I like to keep the tread under the flare so it doesnt kick water up the side and onto the driver.

I agree, that is why I went with the 6" flares.

Re: Backspacing

Thanks for your input guys.

I wanted to run a 29x10.5 I had a specific tire in mind but thats a long way down the road and I will probably change my mind by then. But 10.5 will be the widest I go regardless.

It doesnt really bother me if the wheels stick out past the flares. Plus in NM you could have a cracked winshield, no wing mirrors, lights that dont work and mount a machine gun to the back of your vehicle and it would still pass inspecton

Anyway, so you guys say 15x8 with 4.5 BS?

Also, who is the best company to buy from? the price difference in minimal. Its between quadratc and Jegs (they carry what I want), I only worry they will mess it up and I'll have to return them or something.
