98 Jimmy Weird Problems

My 98 Jimmy's "Check Engine" light is on. Also, it seems to stay in 2nd gear. It starts off slow and takes a good bit of gas to get moving, like it is in 2nd gear. It doesn't seem to shift out of 2nd as it speeds up. It runs about 2K RPM at 45-50 mph.
I assumed that there is a problem in the emissions system, so I plugged it into several OBD tools and can't even get a readout at all. It's as if the plug is dead.
Also, all of the gauges (except Oil psi and Volt meter) loose all readings intermittently. I think that may be a seperate problem, but I'm not sure.
If you have any ideas, please clue me in.
I really don't know what to do without getting a trouble code from the OBD system.
Thanks

Stop at advance autoparts or autozone and see if they can scan it...Your truck sounds like it went into limp mode which can be a 100 different things..We need the code...

Re: 98 Jimmy Weird Problems

It won't give a code, or anything else.
I've plugged it in a three different stores with different brands of tools.
Any other ideas?

Did you turn the key to ACC with the OBDII code reader plugged in?

Re: 98 Jimmy Weird Problems

When the reader is plugged in, it shows nothing at all on the readout. It doesn't matter where the key is, the reader still shows absolutely nothing. Since it doesn't give anything at all, I can't read the present or past codes. It knows enough to turn the "Check Engine" light on and to make everything go wacky, but refuses to tell me anything.
I've about had it with this thing.
Any more questions or comments are welcome and appreciated.
