Hey look! A Grizzly/Polar bear hybrid! Let's shoot it!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grizzly-polar_bear_hybrid

Bah. While my opinion of hunting is a hazy one at best (food and other requirements for sustaining one's own life comes first to mind, and also population control is sometimes justified, despite the fact that the "population problem" itself was likely a result of human intervention in the first place) I have no problem defining some hunters and their pursuits. In this case, those involved clearly have tiny dicks, and are attempting to compensate for it by hunting big bears. How is this classified as a "sport" anyways? Something tells me another trophy pelt on the wall isn't exactly a key necessity for surviving..

Hunter: "Let's go hunt bears!"
Guide: "Look! There's a bear! Shoot!"
Hunter: BLAM!!
Guide/Fellow Associates: "Good shot man" "Yeah, great shot buddy" *more congratulations, high fives, pats on the ass, etc.*
Hunter: "Wow. The 2 minutes of exhilaration from shooting that bear was really worth its life. What? It's a rare hybrid!? BONUS!!!"

Me like guns. Me shoot things. Me big man.

Re: Hey look! A Grizzly/Polar bear hybrid! Let's shoot it!

hunting's alright, but i go with a bow and arrow, so as to make the kill with my own strength... and i've only ever hunted deer. and there's lots and lots of deer. besides, if you're got a driver's license, you're a certified deer hunter.

as for bears, fuck those hunters. aren't polar bears on endangered species list? wouldn't they get penalized somehow by UN or something? sry, i'm kind of uneducated in that area, but i'd figure as much. Now, just a question, if its a hybrid, and they let it live, wouldn't it possibly multiply, and solve the problem of decreasing polar bears due to melting ice caps?

I've got no issue with hunting, if you're going to eat what you've killed. But gratuitous trophy taking should have gone out decades ago.

Polar bears are protected in the US:

In the United States, polar bears are a federally protected species under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. This protection prohibits hunting of polar bears by non-Natives and established special conditions for the importation of polar bears or their parts and products into the United States. Eskimos and other Alaska Natives are allowed to harvest some polar bears for subsistence and handicraft purposes.

However I don't think other countries have the same laws, and I'm sure enforcement above the Arctic Circle isn't a priority.

I agree. Referring to that link, this is the first time i've ever heard of grizzly/polar hybrid. Why did they kill it?

I oppose hunting for sport. I dont care if its over populated with deers/bears/racoons or whatever it may be. They have every right to live wherever they want. Like several months ago when they hunted down I believe 1500 black bears in New Jersey because its overpopulated and its a "high risk" that they'll interfere with humans. Well everywhere we go is a high risks of getting hurt by other ppl, raped or murder. God forbid. Whats scary is that we live amongst these ppl and we dont even know it...thats a risk already. So if the animals doesn't hurt anyone then we shouldn't kill them. Can't always assume of there behavior.

Probably looked like a regular Polar Bear until they got up close.

It sounds like that's the stance the hunter takes (assumedly to ward off the threat of punishment for violating the license that was granted to him to hunt Polar bears, not Grizzly bears.) But regardless I feel that still doesn't really justify it. (And I definitely agree trophy hunting should have long since been outlawed.)

I also have concerns in respect to wild animals "encroaching" on neighborhoods, and how the locals often deal with the situation (too commonly with lethal means.) As if it's some hapless coyote's fault that the Taylor Circle development community built itself on top of his home.

Move over woodland creatures! Some clueless yutz needs 1.3 acres to build an unnecessarily large McMansion to house himself, his wife, two kids, and a couple SUVs.

Sadly, that's the attitude....."bears encroaching" is incorrect. "People encroaching" is the correct way to look at it.

Sometimes I think Agent Smith's dialogue from "The Matrix" about humans being a virus is spot-on.

Good! I'm glad its dead.

Bunch of Godless killing machines

Why hasn't Congress addressed the bear threat?

Over the last six years Congress has effectively blocked President Bush from addressing The Bear Threat to America. The senate has consistently cut the Department of Homeland Security's budget for the National Bear Alert System which ranged in colors from white to brown to black, depending on the location and size of the nearest bear hazard.
Steven Colbert has a plan to address The Bear Threat that each and every American faces in our Post 911 world.
Using the technology that Stephen Colbert developed for The Colbert Report's ThreatDown rankings, a similar system can be developed for the nation. Thanks to Stephen's generosity, American taxpayers do not need to be afraid. Any additional funding will be available by cutting existing programs. Colbert has the balls to elimate all K-6 education funding and put it into the National Bear Alert System to keep our children safe from bears in this Post 911 world.
