Engine Knocking

My friend has a dodge neon, which as an extremely heavy knockking when reving the engine but when its idle it runs completely normal. Im thinking it could be a rod, but I really don't know. I dont know neons very well, so could someone help me out as to what could have happened? My friend drove the piss out of it and didn't do any maintanence, so im thinking his engine could be shot. Any suggestion?

Pull the pan and have a look at the rods.

Re: Engine Knocking

I notice a lot of Chrystler vehicles in general knock. My neon has a little over 109k miles on it and it knocks. My mom's neon has 36k miles on it and it knocks. I know someone with a Plymoth that knocks. What I've been told is it's piston slap.

A little is common and tolerable, but he said his friend "has extremely heavy knocking." Not good!

Re: Engine Knocking

piston slap usually only occurs when the motors cold. also knocking in an engine is not usually a rod its usually a rod bearing. imo about 75 percent of engines that knock from "rod knock" can be fixed by replacing the bearings.............unless youve drivin it so much with the knock that pieces of the bearing have damaged the crank and or the sleeve of the rod.

Re: Engine Knocking

I have an 02 neon, Sat while driving, check oil light came on, was driving about 50mph and a knock starting happening. The neons oil was checked and was full. When the car is cool the knock is slight, and no oil light. When it's fully warmed up the oil light returns and the knocking gets louder as I excel. The neon temp is normal, it idols normal with no noise, it runs fine with no noise until about 25mph and thats when the knocking starts to get louder. ????????????????

Re: Engine Knocking

The oil light comes on when oil pressure is too low or non-existent.
