BMW joins forces with Peugeot Citroen to develop new Mini engine

BMW is teaming up with Peugeot Citroen to develop a new family of engines for the Mini.

The two companies will invest £474 million initially in design and development for the project.

The companies say it will produce up to one million engines a year and reduce costs.

BMW's research and development department is to design the engines.

Peugeot Citroen will handle manufacturing and procurement. The project team will operate from Munich, where BMW is based.

Engines for the retro-styled Mini, produced in Oxford, already come from two other cooperative arrangements.

Diesels are made together with Toyota while gasoline engines are produced with DaimlerChrysler.
There's a diesel Mini?

I hope they do well with the Mini developent so that this new generation can be as long-lived as the first.

Well if the PSA/Group can share some of their Common Rail diesel technologies with the MINI, I certainly would be sold.....
