head job ;)

some dude i know has a 91 CRX Si. the engine has 200,000 mi on it which i know aint much but still more than the 135k on my DX hatch. He wants to sell the engine to me for cheap but i dont know exactly how much. Anyways, im thinking the head off the crx will fit right onto my low end? that way i can get rid of shit dual point injection and get a better intake. Plus, if any of you remember, i talked about my car smoking realy really bad before and i came to the conclusion that its probably the valve stem seals. Anyways, his engine doesn't tick at all so his head will probaly stop my problem? just me rambling.......

i had a head rebuilt and machined. look brand new. i think it was $150 and then i spent another $200 in parts (belts, gaskets, water pump, and so on)

i think it's worth it if you love your engine and your not tring to pull 11 sec 1/4 runs

LadyNRedSi, what exactly do they do when they machine a head??? Is is the same as port and polished??? Also does it consist of just bringing the head of ur car to a place that does it, give them 150 and then putting back on ur car and getting some horsepower out of it??? -thanks

The Si head is the same as the DX head...with one exception...the Si has the bigger cam. So yea swappin the heads will probaly give you a HP boost by a bit hehe. And yea you can us the Si intake manifold has the exact same bolt pattern as the 1.5, you don't even need the Si head to make it work cuz its the same head. But for power, and to solve your smokin problem yea i'd put that Si head on there hehe.

Usually having the had machined involves the removal of valves etc and then the bottom of the head being milled until it is all flat so that it provides a solid seal to the gasket/block. At the same time it's worth having the valves and seats machined before reassembly. Porting and polishing is not part of the process although you can pay for it wahile the head is off.

in my case, i found a spare head, took it down, picked it back up within a week, and then had it stuck on. this is where the story goes bad. i don't have a "mechanic" so the car went to a place someone suggested. long story short, that place screwed my a6. so, get yourself a helm's if you plan on being your own mechanic (if your not afraid of a head job...the rest of the car is cake)...or be sure you take it somewhere trusted.

no, having it rebuilt/machined is not the same. port n polish they are actually "porting" to allow more flow through. machined they are just cleaning it up. it's kinda like having a flywheel resurfaced. they take a little off and so yes, it ends up slightly lightened BUT, nothing compared to actually having it lightened. ya dig?

i did notice after the "new" head was on the car it didn't gain major HP however it did open up quicker. if you do this swap...it will probably feel like the Dx on caffine :jump:
