How do I start?

I was wondering if anyone could advise me how to get into racing, what type of car you would suggest for some one new to it.

Re: How do I start?

I assume you are just starting to drive? There are many options on this as this seems to be a common thread recently with many different responses. Some things you may want to include are your price range, are you using it as the daily driver, what type of things are you looking for in the car (RWD, AWD, FWD, turbo, NA, Japanese, American, etc.). You should look at different reviews on cars and check out the mpg, reliability, modification potential, saftey if thats an issue for you, etc.

Re: How do I start?

You wanna get into racing?
step 1: get a driver's license
step 2: get a car (it dosent matter what car you get since no one drives a good car the first time around)
step 3: drive for a few months till you got the hang of it
step 4: contact your local SCCA and find out where they are having the next event.
step 5: show up to the event with the registration money (between 20 and 40 dollars usually) and race.

TA-DA...easy as hell right?

and if drag racing is your thang its even easier. just follow steps 1 - 3 then find out where the nearest track is and go pay and run.

That is the best way if you want to get into racing. Also, I suggest you stay away from high power cars and stick to something like a Civic Si because, like Musashi said, you're not going to be fast anyhow because of a lack of driving experience. Learn to drive fast first and then get a fast car. It is much safer for everyone and you will learn better in a slower car.

Re: How do I start?

Get a 2002 Subaru WRX. Let the modding begin as you get use to the power. Stock they only put out like 170whp. It's when you add mods that it gets fun.

Re: How do I start?

For racing? get one of these-

Ariel Atom w/ Honda K20 for less then a Corvette, 200hp, <500kg, faster around the Top Gear track then a Porsche Carrera GT.

A supercharged one is probably the best track car under $100,000. For over $100,000, I'd wait for a Freestream T1. For over a million, Ferrari sometimes sells old F1 cars...

Realistically it all depends what kind of racing you want to get into, more information would be useful.

Better yet, go Super Kart. Super cheap (for racing) at 30 grand, 0-100 in less than 3 seconds, 150mph top speed, and capable of pulling over 2g's when cornering. In-kart footage from a Laguna Seca race

I agree, the styling of past Civics was pretty bland but this new Si is great looking. Did they get some Itiallians over there at Honda?

Uhhh, this coming from somone that drives a four door Toyota Corolla? I hate that bullshit that it is just a Civic. Still would beat the shit out of your car.

My point in saying not to get a capable car is that you will hone your skills more with a less capable car.

some people hate civics, some people like them, i'm in between, dont know about civics where you live, but around here you see civics everywhere, and they have the same thing done to them, by all means i have respect for a civic that's done right, but those are hard to come by, most of them are ricier than me, its like "oh, another civic" but maybe thats different in your area

I know what i drive, and i choose what i drive because i planned for the future, i dont need a car that drinks gas like micheal jackson drinks boys milk, and constantly cutting deep scars in my wallet from maintenance and insurance, thats why a top priority of mine was four doors = less insurance costs. I need a car to get me from point A to point B untill i'm finished with college + i'm a big toyota fan, keep in mind that i dont live with mommy and daddy, damn, im getting sick and tired of repeating myself to people who makes comments like "you drive a slow car, you have no right to say that" etc etc,..... Just because i'm not fast doesn't mean i can't post my opinions about civics, i may as well buy a 11 sec car the next day, but i'm still the same person with the same views on a civic. Why are we so prejudice, labeling people for what they drive, I'm no excuse, but i tend to label the car more than the person, but i would never say "you drive a slow car, you have no right to say that" (maybe not the exact words, but you get the point)....its not what you drive, but what you've done to it and how you drive. In the end, i'm just a regular car enthusiast like you, trying to keep it real
