Thumbs up CPS failure under investigation by NHSTA

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to take action on the CPS failures and consider them as a potential safety issue! To bad that NHTSA is not investigating all GM cars/trucks with the same type failures. I suppose not enough complaints by the owners! If NHTSA does find this to be a safety issue, a recall would be issued. GM would have no control, except to comply!

NHTSA Action Number : PE06016 NHTSA Recall Campaign Number : N/A Make / Models : Model/Build Years:
CHEVROLET / AVALANCHE 2002
CHEVROLET / SILVERADO 2001-2002

GMC / SIERRA 2001-2002
Manufacturer : GENERAL MOTORS CORP. Component :
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
Date Investigation Opened : May 4, 2006
Date Investigation Closed : Open
Summary:

THE OFFICE OF DEFECTS INVESTIGATION (ODI) HAS RECEIVED 11 COMPLAINTS OF CRANK POSITION SENSOR FAILURE RESULTING IN SUDDEN ENGINE STALL WHILE DRIVING IN CERTAIN GM VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 8.1L ENGINES. NINE (9) OF THE 11 COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN FILED SINCE FEBRUARY OF 2005. IN SOME CASES, THE COMPLAINANTS ALLEGED THAT AS RESULT OF THE ENGINE SHUTTING DOWN, THE VEHICLE LOST POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. ODI HAS ALSO RECEIVED EARLY WARNING REPORTING DATA THAT CONTAIN FIELD REPORTS DESCRIBING REPLACEMENT OF THE CRANK POSITION SENSORS AS REMEDIES FOR NO START OR STALLING CONDITIONS. A PRELIMINARY EVALUATION HAS BEEN OPENED TO ASSESS THE SCOPE, FREQUENCY, AND POTENTIAL SAFETY CONSEQUENCES ASSOCIATED WITH THE ALLEGED DEFECT.

Re: CPS failure under investigation by NHSTA

Interesting info Bo. When the crank position sensor goes out on you it can be a real bad experience.

I wonder if there have been any accidents or injuries reported as a result. Because until that happens the investigation results may be zero. Hopefully something comes out of it.
