Thinking WRX STi
Oh, and no, I don't mean the new one, that sucker is butt ugly.
If I get Officer status in the Navy (Pending), I will most likely get a new car this next year (I'll be gone for around 6 months before I get back for whatever vacation). I thought about getting a turbo for my T/A, and some suspension goodies, but the reality of it is that it will never handle like an IRS car. I'll be listing the T/A on ebay sometime this week, and see how things turn out. Hopefully I won't be taking that big of a hit. Most likely i'm going to sell it for over $16K. In any event, I plan on getting a 2004/2005 Subaru STi. I will, of course be modifying it. Anyone know of any good tuners for these cars, and what mods aid them the most? My goal is to have a low 12 sec. STi. I know i'll have to upgrade the fuel pump and injectors, and might need a larger turbo. Your thoughts on mods?

Re: Thinking WRX STi
I personally like the brand new ones but thats just me. As far as i mods go you'll probably want a bigger turbo (and of course all the nessecary mods to support it) as the ones on them are little. Let us know how it turns out.
Edit: I have been in an 06 STi and it is pretty nice. You should at least check one out first.

Re: Thinking WRX STi
the new STi's handles better then the 04/05 ones, the new STi can actually hang with the EVO 9 MR in handling and as shown in best motoring, it has better high end stability then a E46 M3. this is all due to the much improved aerodynamics.
now on the what needs to be done to make them low 12 second cars. you would probrably need around 400whp to run low 12's with that car. stock turbo maxes out around 300whp give or take. stock injectors are only 440cc if i recall correctly. so definitly bigger injectors and bigger turbo, you might be able to get away with running a larger top mount for better response. and the next key ingredient is the ECU. stock fuel management sucks, before they made reflashes of piggyback ecu's, STi's would blow their engines when boost creeping to 18-19 psi. ( stock is 16.5 psi ) the best piggy back i think is the TurboXS U-tech. so yeah good luck with yoru quest with the STi, they have much better interiors, are built much better, and have waaay stronger clutch/ tranny then the EVO's do.

Re: Thinking WRX STi
Yeah the stock clutch on my Evo went out after only a few thousand miles. Then again I bought it used, and don't know what the previous owner had driven it like.

Re: Thinking WRX STi
I personally think STIs are some of the hardest to tune cars there are. The ECU is so damn governed that any alteration will cause it to either fry or to lock itself up in limp mode.
I dont know how much theyve advanced since I last looked into it. My best friend bought one in 03 and its been three years and there just inst any safe tunning for it so yeah 3 years later he is still running stock. All I know is every single STI that Ive personally seen run 12s end up blowing up 3-6 months down the line. Evos are supposed to be weaker and all but in reallity the 4G63 is nuke proof and I rather strip my clutch then blow my engine. STIs just dont last if you tune them........but Im no expert and maybee someone out there actually learned how to do it right.....I just havent seen it. Man I just plainly dont like STI drivers either. For some reason all the ones I know have huge egos and think they are immortal unstopable unbeatable cars. But Im sure you wont get that infection LS1Z28.

Re: Thinking WRX STi
Yeah, I don't have the i'm the best persona. I've got more important things to do then to condescend those around me. To be honest alot of the LS1 community are dickheads (Not the ones on here, the ones from other boards).

Re: Thinking WRX STi
Just buy the Vishnu stage 2 package. They claim it should get you 12's flat.

Re: Thinking WRX STi
Yeah, some of the guys at LS1Tech.com can be rather rude. Not per say with me, but i've seen just flat out dickheads post on there, especially in the Western Forum.
Matt you should know about some of the jerk LS1 community. What after meeting some of the more likeable members of Balls Deep car club.

Re: Thinking WRX STi
2.5L STi's are crap. Cast pistons, plastic engine mounts...
It's a pity the USDM never got to see the much better (opinion) and more tuneable 2L STi's
