Completed - Tamiya Pennzoil R34 Skyline

This is the Tamiya R34 Pennzoil JGTC Skyline. I think many know the car from the Playstation Gran Tourism games. If not, then its basically a super touring championship winning car over in Japan.

The model was a joy in terms of fitment and precisions, however I opted to make the model a little more difficult for me. Don’t I always. I decided that X18 for CF wasn’t enough, plastic antenna wasn’t good enough, and that decals for hood pins just wasn’t right.

So armed with Sakastu (spelling) metal turned parts for antenna base and antenna, Acu stion window clips and hood pins, and SMS 1024 twirl weave decals, I was going to try and make the build a little more interesting. CF for all the under pans, window air vents, engine pan, interior dash, steering console and centre console, with CF here and there. Removed kit supplied roof antenna base, prepared many parts with Alclad metal paints etc etc… Even cut the decal up, so as to remove the unwanted hood pin decals. The only thing I missed was the seat belts. I even sanded the tyres.

Oh, how this turned on me. Three months in the making, and many ruined CF decals due to a sheet of SMS CF decal that just wouldn’t stay as one bit. Keep breaking up, I applied a decal upside down, doh. Had to get some spares, and botched the paintjob. I didn’t really want black panel lines, but hey it was a fix up. But overall it did get completed, and I learnt a lot.

I hope you like it. The model has been completed for nearly a month now, and I’ve even had a friend want to buy it, but I declined his offer.

All the progress pictures are here if anyone is interested. Hope you enjoyed it. Comments good or bad always welcome.

Nice work. I had a sheet of SMS C/F that did that, and the owner of SMS replaced it in person at a show I went to. The stuff worked once, but later when I used the same sheet it was all brittle and fell apart.

Despite the problems you ran into, it turned out great! Well done!

Strange, I've never had problems with SMS CF decals. They do go soft quickly, but settles down superb. Maybe I was just lucky with my sheets thusfar - I love that stuff!

Re: Completed - Tamiya Pennzoil R34 Skyline

Thank you all for the great comments. Much appreciated. I’m pleased you all like it, made it all worthwhile. Already got my next Skyline planned, I’ve built the R33 Calsonic, R34 Pennzoil, so it has to be the 2003 Calsonic R34.. LOL When I get me present projects out the way.

Superb result. I particularly like the subtle panel lines - did you use a marker or flow in a wash?

The panel lines were done with a very fine brush, and watered down black ink. I don’t use maker pens for panel lines. I think the marker pens can over power them. I like to flow in extremely water down ink, so as it just stains the line, and not fill it completely.

Risky to add a panel line wash to yellow, as it can end up looking a bit toonish. Thanks for the nice comments.
