i have a pontiac sunbird that i believe is getting too much fuel it emits black smoke, it idles real rough and when you put it in gear it stalls out when i actually drove it the other day i went throug hhalf a taank of gas in about 30 miles and could only go about 20 mph any ideas what could be causing this i cant afford to take it to a garage and do most repairs myself just have a hard time diagnosing things

Re: sunbird getting too much fuel

The year and engine size would be helpful. Did the check engine light come on at all?

When running rough, does it backfire out the intake or exhaust at all. Or does it just sound like a "miss". Probably don't doubt that your plugs are fouling out with all that gas.

Exclamation Re: sunbird getting too much fuel

I actually have a 1994 Sunbird with the Fuel injected 2.0 L4 Sohc that has a similar problem. The exhaust has Black smoke coming out of it and I know it is flooding with Fuel. It gives off the sound of a miss like a plug problem would.

I have pulled off the CAT Conv.
Replaced the Fuel Filter, Way more of a Problem after changing.

Also Replaced;
Sparkplugs
Wires
Map Sensor (Pulled off Junkyard car, No change in problem, Maybe Bad?)
Checked gas for water
Changed all Fluids, Inc flushing cooling system (Not related to this problem)

Also No Gas or water in Oil.
