Alright,Explain this one to me please.
Alright everytime i fill up my gas tank to full, after i hit 3 quarters left in the gas mark, i have 160 miles(maybe 10 miles more or 10 miles less) however when i hit half a tank mark , i only get about 100 to 120 miles on that quarter of tank. Then the same on one quarter of tank left. Anyone have any idea why ? Maybe there's like a gallon or two in the gas line to the engine ? One time i got like 480 on a single tank of gas, that's when it just went under the last quarter of gas left mark. Maybe I'm crazy,

Re: Alright,Explain this one to me please.
480 miles on a tank of gas seems a bit high.. how many gallons do you have?
26 or 34? I know I can get about 220-250 miles by the time I hit 1/2 tank.. but can only really get about 300-350 on the tank (getting gas when the light comes on). This is hwy miles

Re: Alright,Explain this one to me please.
I have a 34 gal tank. I average about 300 to 325 mi to a tank. My fuel light comes on when there are 5 gals left in the tank (equal to about 50 to 55 mi remaining). Its the 5 gal "reserve" that throws the guage off slightly.

Re: Alright,Explain this one to me please.
What do you mean by throwing the gauge off slightly?

Re: Alright,Explain this one to me please.
Mine does pretty much the same thing. About 200 miles the first 1/4 then another 100 for 300 miles at half a tank. Then, from 1/2 to 1/4 I can get another 200 or so miles. Normally get about 500 miles give or take 20 at 1/4 of a tank. But, it is the 32 gallon tank on a v6 driven mostly highway at 55 mph. Gotta love country roads.

Re: Alright,Explain this one to me please.
not knowing by facts what i am talking about but most tanks are not square so some of them have bigger top sides then bottom sides. I haven't looked at any newer silverado tanks. But it meassures depth and not gallons. My girlfriend asked the same thing about her integra. The first half tank goes faster then the second half. She didn't understand my logic so my smart answer for her is don't drive on the first half tank its ripping you off.

But if you are correct.. then that's great! But I have read several posts on here where the V6 does not get that much better gas millage than a V8.

Re: Alright,Explain this one to me please.
I think 500 is reasonable. Well actually bad. He has a 32 gall tank right? Thants barely 17mpg or somethin. I have a 5.3 and the most gas I have put in my tank is 24.1. I got 476 miles on that tank. It was intersate driving about 70 to 75 mph

There must be someting wrong with my odometer reading.. because I can barely get 400 miles on a tank and that is on flat road with the cruise control on. Do you have a cover on your bed? Sorry for dominating the board.. I am really bored at work and it's fun talking to people on here

Re: Alright,Explain this one to me please.
Normally, I get between 17 to 19 mpg. When I filled up this week it was 19.35 (I still have the reciept from the pump and write the mileage down at each fillup). Have gotten as high as 22 or 23, but only on long road trips with a 55 mpg speed limit which isn't uncommon in rural NC. I have never let the fuel light come on, I always fill up at about 1/4 of a tank and it's gone about 480 miles, so I don't know how far I could push it.
You are correct, the v6 does have to work harder to get the large mass of a truck moving, hence the sticker for the v6 has a lower epa mileage for city driving than the v8. I think it was 16 or 17. But, at highway speeds, which is 90% of what I do, it makes up for it and may get better mileage than the v8. The sticker said 22 (I think) for highway and I have gotten that a time or two. I've talked to people who said they got 25 or better with a tonneau cap, and that would be amazing. The worst I ever got was 15 and that was after being stuck in traffic in Raleigh for 5 hours going about a cumulative 3 mph. The trick is not to drive with a heavy foot, hard as that may be when grandma is in front of you going 30 mph on a two lane road where you can only pass during 100 feet of every mile. For the average driver, I would say that probably all the engines availible would get within 1-2 mpg of each other because people do a mixture of city/highway driving and it tends to average out between the v8 higher efficiency at stop and go and the v6 higher efficiency at highway. BTW, I just checked and my tank is pretty square, well rectangle, it looks like. Maybe it's like that guy in the old days of nascar who bent the rules about the size of the gas tank in the car by having fuel lines run all over the car to get extra capacity. That's the story I heard anyway. |
