Wierd Grinding/Buzzing noise

[The Concept]

Long story short, I got my first car, a 1991 Cavalier Z24. Was moving it out of the carport after cleaning it for once, and when I went to start it, the lights, sterio, dash, everything worked, but when I went to really start the engine, there was no noise, the lights died on the dash, the stereo went. Figured it was a fluke and just tried again, but when I let it rest, without turning the key back, a wierd Buzzing noise came out of the hood near my battery. People keep telling me that the starter is bad, but I don't see how a starter can stop my battery from even working on the inside, figured I would see if anyone had the same problem in the past, or possibly knows of what could cause this, Thanks in advance for any who respond.
