Question rebuilding engine

Hey guys and girls. I was just wondering if anyone has had to rebuild the lower end of an engine off of a '91 MR2. It's a 5SFE engine. Just wondering if anyone knew rougly how much that might run, or where a good place to get parts for it is, or to find a new engine at a relativly cheap price. Thanks for any help.

Re: rebuilding engine

done the 3s-gte. will cost you lots. i wouldn't bother with 5sfe, prob easier to either swap out or convert to a 3s.

Re: rebuilding engine

Would converting to a 3s make me loose any power? What all would I need to do that?

Re: rebuilding engine

If I went ahead and bought a 3SGTE instead of rebuilding my 5SFE or getting a used one, is the engine all I have to switch or will there be anything else I'd have to change over to support the diffrent type of engine?

Re: rebuilding engine

In addition to the engine you will need a bunch of other stuff:
*main wiring harness
*ecu
*turbo & intercooler set up
*transmission
*axles
*gauge cluster

This is why most people that do "the swap" by a complete rear clip.

Re: rebuilding engine

clips are pretty cheap here... building an engine is pretty expensive. What would you do Jeff?

Re: rebuilding engine

Me personally, I would never do a 3SGTE swap in an NA.
*only exception would be if Hyde gets wrecked I would swap everything over to Jekyl

Re: rebuilding engine

greenfun, don't feel stupid ... pelase feel free to ask. That is how you will learn

People import "rear clips" from Japan. Basically it is just the back 1/2 of the car starting with the firewall between the engine and passenger compartments. When you buy a rear clip, you get everything you need to do the swap.
