I have a 1984 733i and I have been told there is no service manual for this year & model car. Bentley told me to get a manual that covers 533i and 633i for most stuff. Get a Bosch manual for the fuel injection system. A BMW dealer mechanic told me the best thing to get is the manual on cd that comes from BMW Service Group. They are hard to find but once in a while you can find them on e-bay. Hope this helps.

The only problems Ive run into with my 1984 733i have been an idle problem, a broken thermostat, replacing of the water pump, but mainly electrical. Its kind of comical, the dash lights don't work, my rear passenger window will roll down, but not up, the speedometer and temperature gauges go in and out of working and not working. my drivers seat refuses to move anymore which is perfect for me because i can reach the peddles though at 5'1 no body better ever touch it!!! anyway its been a more than excellent car and only minor probs and slight annoyances. As for the manual I have found the Chilton manual covering 1970-1988 BMW coupes and sedans book # 18300 to be very very very helpful in many matters and would highly reccomend it.

Re: 1984 733i restoration in progress.

These articles are pretty old, hope you'll still check them. I have a 84 733i, I need to find out if there is a buzzer for the door when it opens. Mine has never made a sound. I am trying to fix a electrical problem. If I don't crank her up every couple of days the battery will die. I have had the charging system checked and everything was fine. Looking for suggestions!!!

I found a place that has data on CD ROM for purchase which has several BMW titles but I have no idea if any of them are good or not, but you can take a look at: http://www.autocd.com/autocd.html?q=7

I stumbled on this next site and saved it because it has a tremendous amount of electrical data, albiet not for my car. This appears to be a sample page from the Russian equivalent of the site linked above but it might be helpful.
http://www.carsoft.ru/avtorepair/bmw_e34/E34.html

Here's a link to a list of BMW vendors online:
http://home.earthlink.net/~hainesinutah/bmwvendors/

Another good point of contact with other BMW owners is www.roadfly.com. This site is model specific. I've seen owner's manuals emailed to other users but repair manuals are harder to come by. However, you can often ask for help with a specific problem and get very good help from other users.

Re: 1984 733i restoration in progress.

Liberty went and checked the sites out and they have been of help. I found a wiring schematic for the 1987 735i and it has helped me out as well. The biggest problem is that I am still having is my charging system is still draining. I found out that fuses #21, & 27 were pulling 12 volts. Started isolating those electrical systems. Went back to work on it yesterday and I was pulling 12 volts even with those fuses pulled. Got really pissed off!!! Pulled all of the fuses and relay's still had the same problem. Next I am going to disconnect the alternator and starter individually to see if I can isolate the problem. Any suggestions, let me know!

Steve, I don't quite understand what you mean by the fuses "pulling 12V".

I think you're on the right track as far as trying to isolate the problem, but if you measure voltage across an OK fuse it would read 0V because there is no resistance to drop a voltage. If you measure voltage across a blown fuse or a removed fuse, i.e., an open circut, you will read the applied voltage, 12V or so normally for a car.

Here's a procedure I found on roadfly to isolate battery drain problems:

"disconnect the positive cable from the battery and hook one lead of an AMMETER to the disconnected battery cable and the other ammeter lead to the positive battery terminal to measure how many amps are being drawn.

A very small draw is normal - the car has functions that use small amounts of electricity even while car is turned off."

Measure how many amps are being drawn, then disconnect the alternator and read the meter again. When the amperage reading drops, you'll know you've found the problem.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Again, I recommend the www.roadfly.com site as well if you didn't already.
