Ignition Timing

Ehh....I am new to tuning cars. Im kinda confused on how to do the ignition timing on my 94 civic LX. theres 3 marks like this ||| then a mark like this |...should i line up the groove with the 3 marks? or the TDC mark? The idiot who had the car before me removed some sticker under the hood that should have all this relevent info.....frickin idiot! And how many degrees retarded or advanced should i run on my engine? i heard a bit advanced is good. also heard a bit retarded is good for low end torque. it is a 1.5 SOHC non vtec. Any help would be appreciated!
