Long before the Mitsubishi GTO was renamed the 3000GT for the American market, there was the '67 Toyota 2000GT, often billed as the spritual predecessor to the Supra.

I believe the Mitsubishi 3000GT appeared in the U.S. in about 1992 (still called "GTO" in japan). Then, around '95(?), Toyota re-claimed the name, at least in their home market, when TRD produced limited numbers of the special edition JZA80 Supra called the TRD 3000GT as well as the SW20 MR2-based TRD 2000GT.

So, as far as the Japanese market is concerned, and I assure you Toyota is concerned with the Japanese market, the "X000GT" names are decidedly Toyota's.

Then 4000gt would certainly be a legit name for hte nxt supra, but I think they'd have to rename it for the US Domestic market. We didnt see any of those TRD models stateside and we are certainly more familiar with the mitsubishi than the 2000gt. (the same reason mitsu didnt keep the GTO name when it landed here)

I'd only point out that the 3000GT came here in 91. And yes its known as the GTO in Japan so Toyota would have no qualms about callling it a 4000 over there.
