Re: 1992 Buick Road master ac problem
I have never heard of tightening a relay. A relay is an electrical switch - basically a small current to close a switch carrying a larger current.
They are jerking him around to be sure. Maybe you should call them. You also might want to take the car to an a/c shop.

Re: 1992 Buick Road master ac problem
My father-in-law (grumpy) has a 92 roadmonster. Last year he had the system switched from R12 to 134. The mechanic couldn't get the system to work, but told him to take it to a local AC guy. It ended up that something in the computer had to be reset. The system worked fine all last summer. Now after pulling the beast out of storage, the AC works for about five minutes then swithches itself over to economy mode and stops working. To get the system working for another five minutes, grumpy has to pull one of the fuses to reset the AC. It'll count to thirty twice on the climate control display, work for five minutes, then reset itself again to econ mode, and so on the saga goes at every traffic light or so. It may not be what ails laforestd's grandfather, but it shows that a fuse may help get the system working temporarily. If anyone has an idea on how to resolve this issue any help would be appreciated. Grumpy is a mechanic by trade and I have an OTC 4000e analizer.

Re: 1992 Buick Road master ac problem
When my 89 Cad would switch over to econ mode, it was a control module. Don't know how the RM system works so it may not even have the same thing. Basically, the brain for the ac. On the 93 Cad, it was a relay -- you dont tighten them, you replace them.
When the system switched from AC to econ it often is a low freon charge, or the system thinks its a low charge. Even a new relay can be bad -- had my 93 at an ac shop. He replaced the relay and it worked for a couple of days. Then would internittantly not work. Took it back and of course it worked there. I told him to keep checking it. He thought I was crazy, even asked if I knew how to work the system. (both Cads have the same controls) Good luck finding the solution, and please post the results.
