1969 F-bird steering wheel removal

ok i'm having a problem ... i got a 1969 firebird and i'm changing out the ignition switch and i cant get the steering wheel off... i've tried everything... soaking it in grease and all that too... but anyway what i have done is pulled the top plastic piece off (the piece that the horn is built into) and then i saw the nut that holds the steering wheel to the column ... well i took that off and like i said i have pulled pushed cussed scratched my head and still no luck getting it off ... n e suggestions?
