Stuck Receiver Hitch

My receiver hitch looks like hell and im tryin to repaint it. The problem is that I cant get it off. Ive used WD40 and 3in1 and other lube to try and loosen the nuts and bolts. Does anyone have any idea how to get them loose before I decide to cut them

Re: Stuck Receiver Hitch

Are you trying to take the entire hitch off the truck?

as a thought if you are, I'd make sure that if you cut the bolts off that you can get to the nuts & hopefully they aren't welded to the frame...

Re: Stuck Receiver Hitch

Wrap chain or tow strap around it, tie the other end around a sturdy tree then drive away.

Re: Stuck Receiver Hitch

This is really weird because I was just about to post a new thread asking the exact same question. I'm glad I read the new posts before I posted. Even if we get the hitch all the way off whats the procedure to painting it? Here's what I plan to do please let me know if I should do something different. 1. scrape of all old paint 2. sand it all down 3. spray primer on it 4. paint it with black rustoleum

Re: Stuck Receiver Hitch

I guess it depends how fancy you want it to look. I took the easy way out. I sanded the loose stuff off and then brush painted the assembly with household water based matt black enamel. It looks suprsingly good for the amount of time invested.

The best way is to sand the rough stuff. treat the rust with a phosphoric acid based rust treatment and then prime and top coat it. Take a look at some of the PJ1 products or the excelent POR finishes

Re: Stuck Receiver Hitch

I've got a sandblaster, and it takes about 2 bags of sand to have a reviever sparkling. But for the people not as lucky as I am I would sugest just following Markgc's advice.

One thing about your reciever hitches is they're theft resistant

I actually almost did that when I took out the hitch. It was rusted in and I lost the key for the lock. Since I can just buy a new pin and lock for 3 bucks I just cut it off. I didnt do the tree idea thoguh because I was afraid I might of ripped the ass end of my truck off. Instead I beat it out with a sledgehammer and used lots of Wd40.

As for the reciever hitch its gonna stay on...............
