crazy idle on 93 si prelude(need advise)

Ok so here's my story i was driving around with my a/c on all day(2 hours or so non stop) when i realized that the engine temperature raised a bar, i think the car is always supposed to stay in the middle area. So i turned off the a/c it went back down. And then later on i turned it back on and the temperature started raising fast all the way to the hottest. Good thing i was almost home. So i turned on the car maybe 5 hrs later. and i realized that the car took alot quicker to get warmed up and then it was over the middle. When im stoped i also realized that the car is reving or somthing because the RPM goes to 1000 to 2000(jumping action) and does it all the time non stop unless im stepping on the gas. So that's my problem, does anyone know why my car is over heating and reving like that? it only has 121,000 miles but its a 93'.
Please help
just a Note: it's a 93' prelude si non v tech Fuel Injected.

Re: crazy idle on 93 si prelude(need advise)

It's probably over heating because the thermostat is now shot...that should be a quick and cheap fix. If your temp gauge goes up and you HAVE to drive just a lil' bit more to get someplace safe to pull over or to your house turn off the AC and turn on the heat, it'll help cool the engine some.

As for the idle issue check out our Honda forums and ask them.

i had the same issue, in my case it was the thermostat, and i had a leak on a house. it wierd the mechanic told me i you have a leak in the system it looses preassure and causes the rpm to go crasy, and in my case it would turn off too.

Thumbs up Re: crazy idle on 93 si prelude(need advise)

Hey man I also had this problem... I replaced my thermo. That fixed the overheating issue. Then i read codes on the car and found out the idle was due to a broken MAP sensor. It tells your motor how rich or lean to run. If it doesn't know, then it trips the o2 sensor, making it jump idle unless in gear. Uhh I think my codes read 1,3,5,14. When i got a new Map sensor, it ended up fixing the problem, but I had to spend bout mins. resetting everything to the new sensor.
