1995 Lesabre Trouble Codes Redux

Hello All,
I have a 1995 Lesabre with the SES light coming on and off frequently.

It has an "OBDII style" connector under the dash...but neither my nor autozone's OBDII scanner will get any codes from it (error).

The radiator shroud does not say "OBDII compliant" so I presume that it is OBDI.

The Pins in the connector are 4,5,8,9,14,16 as described in this drawing:

\ X | X | X | 4 | 5 | X | X | 8 /
`\9 | X | X | X | X |14 | X |16/
``------------====-------------

in this thread:

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=307153

I read that thread several times through and it doesn't seem to me that the possibility of getting codes off of this is completely eliminated...but it also doesn't say how to get them.

There MUST be some way to get the codes off of this car with this connector or by modifying it in some way.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Also, BTW the car appears to be running fine...then dies abruptly on the road.

It will not start if I slip it into neutral...but if I stop completely, put it in park, then start it...it starts back up immediately.

I'm guessing that the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) might be bad...but I'd really like to get the codes to confirm this before I start throwing parts at it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: 1995 Lesabre Trouble Codes Redux

Hello

Welcome to AF!

Has your car ever started in N? I was thinking that the crank position sensor may be bad. The VSS would cause shifting problems.

Check what month your car was man. Look at the Vehicle Control Information label on the top of the radiator, and see if it says OBD II certified.

This is stuff that I found in the link you posted.

Regards

Dan

Re: 1995 Lesabre Trouble Codes Redux

Hi thanks,
As I said above the information sticker on the radiator does NOT say OBDII certified.

I can't say if the car ever started in N or not...I assumed that all cars would start in N...didn't they used to? It is actually not my car...but my girlfriend's.

What would knowing the month of manufacture help me with?

My guess with the VSS is that it is registering the speed as above whatever the governor limit is...and therefore shutting off the car...is this possible?

I'll certainly look into the crank position sensor, too...

But what I really want to know is how to get those codes. That may well tell me what the problem is and I won't have to play guessing games...

How can I get the codes??

Thanks,
Gnomonic

It is a transition car obd1.5, some scanners will not work here, Snap on will work for one, actron 9150 will also work.

Re: 1995 Lesabre Trouble Codes Redux

Found a guy who knew a guy...

This guy had a handheld scanner (Genisys something or other) that could do everything but make toast.

He said the car was OBDI. And the codes pointed me right to the Throttle Position Sensor.

Bought the part...installed with some moderate cursing (screws were hard to get to)...and the thing now runs like a top.

And he scanned it for free...but I delivered a case of beer.

Sometimes good things happen.

Thanks all.
