Burnt VC... What gives?

My friend just got a new car, and he bought two MTX Thunder 5500's in the vented Sledgehammer box. He put a Power Acoustik LT1920/2 one 'em. I hadn't looked up the specs on the woofers, and since I assumed he had, here's how we wired them.
subs wired to 2 ohms, amp bridged. 4GA power/ground. We wired them to the stock Infinity system, and converted the wires running to the factory sub into RCA's for the amp. It pounded, HARD. For awhile. We were driving and starting smelling a burning, so we pulled over, looked for problems, and since all seemed clear we turned it back up to about 1/4 volume and then we started hearing that dreaded sound. The cone on one sub completely froze up.
Did he overpower the subs? He was pushing close to 1900W to 'em, and after looking up the specs, I think that was the problem... What do you guys think??
EDIT:
If the amp was too much for the subs, what could he get in the price range, to go with the amp. We need something that'll pound as hard or harder.

Re: Burnt VC... What gives?

Wow...thats weird cause I had a Power Acoustik amp blow a sub today also. Not as good of a sub but I blew one too. Odd. My amp is the TS-1920-2. The one with the "plasma sphere" on top.

Re: Burnt VC... What gives?

If the coil melted, then he thermalled the subs, no other explanation for it

On another note, that amp does not do 1900 watts, and it is not stable at 2ohm bridged

Re: Burnt VC... What gives?

Below is the spec sheet for your amp(red), and below that is the spec sheet for your speakers(green).
As you can see, the 440w output of your amp was too much for the 300w input of your speakers.
It's really as simple as that...

Amplifier TypeDual ChannelAmplifier Output2-channel
PowerRMS Power370 Watts x 2Output Details440 Watt - 2 Ohm - 2 channel(s), 370 Watt - 4 Ohm - 2 channel(s), 880 Watt - 1 channel(s)Output Power1920 Watt
FeaturesHigh Pass Frequencies50 - 500 HzLow Pass Frequencies30 - 500 HzResponse Bandwidth10 - 30000 HzDistortion Factor0.02 %

  • 10" 4-ohm subwoofer
  • mica-filled polypropylene cone with rubber surround
  • expanded poly cone dustcap
  • stamped steel basket
  • chrome terminals accept up to 8-gauge speaker wire
  • frequency response: 35-150 Hz
  • power range: 150-300 watts RMS
  • sensitivity: 88.25 dB
  • top-mount depth: 6-1/8"
  • sealed box volume: 0.75 cubic feet
  • ported box volume: 1.25 cubic feet
  • Recommended Q-Logic Box Type: 1, 2, 3
  • warranty: 1 year

He overpowered it yes, but the specs of the amp and sub don't matter for the most part. Nearly every speaker I own is being driven by an amp 2-3x its rating, it's the user that blows speakers, not the amp.
