Angry Flaking paint on roof rack

All of a sudden the black finish on my 1999 bravada's roof rack is starting to flake right off. You can grab pieces of it and just peel away. Has anybody experienced something like this before? Is the rack difficult to remove for repainting? Any input would be appreciated.

Re: Flaking paint on roof rack

Yes, mine did that too.

Tremcladed it and all is well. Didn't even take it off of the roof.

Re: Flaking paint on roof rack

If you want to remove it it's only 8 Torx bolts to do it. I am going to remove mine for good just because I have no use for it.

Re: Flaking paint on roof rack

Tremclad is great stuff. I used their clear coat while re-finishing some mag wheels once. they still looked like new a few years later when I sold the wheels.

Re: Flaking paint on roof rack

Mine is doing the same thing - I think it is a typical problem. I plan on taking off the rack this summer, rough sand and repaint/clearcoat.

Re: Flaking paint on roof rack

They had clearcoat about 15 years ago (Shit man I'm old) so I would almost think they still make it.
I got it in Canadian tire then, I should look there the next time I'm there.

At that time it was the only spray bomb clear coat that I found which listed aluminum on the bottle.

Re: Flaking paint on roof rack

Anyone have any pics of a 2000 or so Blazer minus the roof rack?

I never use it and I'm half tempted to remove it all together but I'd like to see what it looks like without going through the hassle of removing it to see. Thanks ....

BTW, part of the problem with painting it is the parts that are peeling in my case are the plastic mounts and I suspect any paint will peel back off in time anyway.

Re: Flaking paint on roof rack

Ive seen a few 97 style blazer w/ the roof rack off. I herd people take them off to clean it up or smooth out the car. But i think the look worse with them off. Go on cardomain.com, theres a few on there w/o racks

There is quite a few pics of them w/o the rack. I personally think it looks a helluva lot better

Re: Flaking paint on roof rack

mine was flaking also. i sanded it down, primed it, and painted it with a black metalic paint i picked up at walmart (closest match to the factory paint), then cleared it. looks awsome.

Re: Flaking paint on roof rack

Sounds like a good job.

I like the roof rack, in my eyes, without it, it looks linda budget on my particular vehicle.

not at all. its held on by 4 torx bolts. the rack itself is not heavy but u should have an extra set of hands to help with taking it off and putting back on (better to be safe then sry).
