Calling All Designers

Hello.

First Entry, is it called a thread?

My first communication concerns original, custom, concept car modelling.

Anyone out there working on their own concept car model, any scale / medium / media? I'm not talking about customizing a car that already exists. I'm talking about scratchbuilding, probably just "curbside", accentuating body design idea / ideas.

I'm looking forward to visiting w/ you all,

Your new friend,

Taka-Q

Re: Calling All Designers

I am. The links are in my signature. Mine is a 1/12 scale street rod inspired from 30's and 40's Fords. Now the design isnt for mass production, more of a one off show car. Mine will be full detail, not a curbside.

Yes, some builders here do custom cars. Here's one I did recently.

Re: Calling All Designers

Mike and P9o1r1sche,

Thanx for your replies.

Mike, your build is magnificent. Did you take any early design steps in 3d, like in clay or other, or did you just have a very clear vision, supported by a lot of planning, measuring, and sketching?

P9o1r1sche, your pictured project is so elegant and well proportioned. Would you please share your process for the build up of the complex curved body sections?

Thanx again both,

Taka-Q

Thanks for the kind remarks. The early design steps were hundreds upon hundreds of rough sketches, a lot of them in my school notebooks. I had a clear idea of what I wanted, but getting there is the hard part. After I had the basic idea roughed out on paper I transferred designing on paper to the computer.

Using CAD I was able to lay out the entire car with all the parts and put the puzzle together. Making everything fit correctly, and look correct to was a lot of trouble. When you move one part, it affects the entire design. It was an extreme challenge ballancing form versus function. I couldnt have done it with out CAD. (Function? Its just a model right? No, its a 1/12 scale car.)

I have to say, even with all the designing done, there are still unexpected problems that are associated with a build like this. Those things are bound to happen, but it's all part of the fun in building something unique. Everything is planned out to the thousandth of an inch, yet built in plastic something may need to be changed. The overall design has changed a dozen times due to this.

Thanks for the interest.
