93 blazer tranny problems

my 1993 blazer(full size) has a 4l60e. it seems like its searching for third when kicked down from OD. it also seems to search to find OD when shifting up. all the other gears seem OK but i dont know for how long. is it just in need for a rebuild or is there a quick fix....

Welcome to Automotive Forums

I don't want to toss a quess your way and have you pull the transmissionfor no reason.

If you still have the old oil how about sending in a sample to get analized. As long as you haven't mixxed it with anything that is.

If you don't have a clean sample you can probably suck enough through the filler tube to send in. A long thin piece of clean plastic should work.Treat it like a syphon.

Re: 93 blazer tranny problems

Are you saying it can't properly shift from forth to third and back to OD?

Re: 93 blazer tranny problems

yeah it sometimes but not always it seems to not want to "kick down" from OD when i need to pass or going up hill and such...it also seems to search for OD when it wants to shift back up.. however if i manually pull it down into D it works great but if i manually put it back to OD it still seems to "search" i never usually put it into OD except on the interstate so i never noticed it much before. its been doin this now for bout a month...service engine soon light is on but i had it hooked up and they said it was an oxygen sensor( lack of converters and single exhaust) or so they said.

Re: 93 blazer tranny problems

What exactly do you mean search? Is it shifting into the gear and then back out, or is it slipping when it tries to shift into that gear? If it goes in and out of gear, you could have slipping clutches. Whats the milage on the tranny, are you getting convertor lockup? It could also be a converter lock-up issue too.

Re: 93 blazer tranny problems

well it seems to try to shift but never quite engages...sometimes it does fine no problems but other times it sounds like its in neutral...just revs...until it engages which sometimes takes a few seconds other times a lil longer

Re: 93 blazer tranny problems

Sounds like the TCC solenoid is sticking or worn out.

Re: 93 blazer tranny problems

Shouldn't be much to replace.

You might have a weak torque convertor as well.

When is the last time you changed the filter and fluid?

Bear in mind the transmission shifting is computer controled.
All engine and trans sensors play apart in the shifting.
A engine not running right will make the transmission not shift right to.
Engine tps and map and mph and engine load sensors play a big part.
Go over engine and trans computer with a good scanner and check everything out.
Make sure the engine is tuned up good.
Any check engine lights or codes?
Speedo working right?

Re: 93 blazer tranny problems

well the SES light comes on after bout 5 miles but the local shop told me it was an oxygen sensor due to my lack of cat converters and true duel exhaust, and the K&N filter.. ...dont really know i didnt see the codes myself ..but it runs fine if u leave the shifter in D...actually very strong..but im on the interstate bout once every two weeks and it only happens when its in OD ..im gonna try and have it scanned again this weekend and hopefully there will be more info after that...its freakin me out man!!!

Get it on a good trans/engine capable scanner and the problem may show up.
Them only do it ever week or two problems are hard to find a lot of times.
When one of them comes in the front door I always run out the back door and wait untill it does it all the time or 2-3 times a day or all of the time
Sure makes it a lot easy to find.
But on the good side it may not be a serious problem just hard to catch in the act.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.
