Replacing Rear Calipers On 98 GMC Jimmy 4x4 rear disc

Doing the calipers UNFORTUNATELY tomorrow. I hate brake work... Anyways any tips on making the bleeding easier? It's got an ABS block (my first truck with one) and I'm scared to get bubbles in there and pooch my brakes badly. Is it best to QUICKLY disconnect the old one, connect the new one, bleed the system IMMEDIATELY so bubbles don't go up to the front then do the next one the same way? Thanks

Thumbs down Re: Replacing Rear Calipers On 98 GMC Jimmy 4x4 rear disc

Well the bleeding proved to be the simplest part. On BOTH sides the %##!%^ caliper slide pins were completely SEIZED in place. Wouldn't move. I lucked out and managed to break the first 3 loose with a pipe wrench and wd40, the last (and I mean LAST ONE literally) sheared off. Great, once again I've proven that rust is stronger than steel alloy. Now I'm really screwed, I need to leave town on at 1000 mile trip Tuesday morning, the parts store closed after I sheared the pin so I can't even order the stuff till monday which means it won't even be in till tuesday at 3pm (I live passed the arctic water shed, all parts have to be ordered).

WHAT'S MORE! I cannot remove the other half of the pin that is seized into the caliper mounting bracket. So now I have to find a mounting bracket, that's great with NO junkyard in town and NO dealership and I would assume there is zero aftermarket for an item like this. Considering the calipers ( L I T E R A L L Y ) cost me 533$ I can only imagine how much this (obviously low demand) bracket is going to cost for me to order it new from a damned dealership from out of town.

Sorry I'm just venting. I do all my own work and so far my jimmy has cost me over 1000$ just in brake repairs and it's an almost brand new truck. W T F

Where are you buying your parts???

I paid $40 each for my rear calipers and $50 each for the front. The caliper bracket should be $15-$30. You might want to replace both sides. The other side probably won't last long with all the dried grease and rust in there.

I'm buying parts here, it's just the price of them no matter where you go, trust me I shopped around. What year do you have? There's big differences in prices between years, not to mention in 98's there are 2 different rear styles, front mounted and rear mounted, and the price varies there as well. They are giving me a core return on the calipers so I get some back, I just wish I didn't have a fubared bracket because I have nowhere to order it from now.

I have a 98. Someone is BSing you about there being two different styles of calipers. The only different styles are disc and drum.

You may have trouble finding the caliper bracket from a local parts supplier. They're available through rockauto.com, but you'll have to wait for them to be shipped.

I managed to find one, I had to have a friend drive it in from out of town. The parts store I went with sold me "unloaded calipers" which came with NO pins and NO bracket. Wish they told me I had an option when I ordered them... I had my friend pick me up a set of "loaded calipers" for the SAME PRICE (not a penny more, go figure) and it came with everything. It's done now at least, I just hope I never have to do them again, the labor was very very minimal, it was the cost to my wallet that sucked lol.
