vr4 question

I was driving down the road yesterday and every time i push cluth , or let off the gas my car cuts off. It runs fine as long as i give it gas, but if i let off it just cuts off. I replaced the fuel filter today and its still doing it? Do you think its the fuel pump???If I set it on cruise its ok, but like i said when i put in neutral or let off the gas, the tach goes down, the dash lights come on, and the car cuts off. My check engine light hasnt come on, I didnt know if it was the fuel pump, or a fuse that controls the fuel pump?

Re: vr4 question

Did you plug the MAS back in, after you did the work on teh fuel filter.
Also, I'd check to make sure your y-pipe and intake piping are correctly and firmly attached.

Re: vr4 question

OK, first off, check your MAS. I'm assuming you know what that is, but if not, that is the box type thing, attached to your intake, before the throttle body. Check to make sure the plug is securely attached.

Then double check ANY and ALL intake piping that you touched when you worked on your fuel filter.

I sincerely doubt this has anything to do with your fuel pump. Chances are, something that you moved, removed & replaced, didn't get put back on completely. Double check everything from the intake to the throttle body.

Re: vr4 question

i agree, if an intercooler pipe is loose enough, it won't be able to create a large enough vacuum to keep the car running when you aren't moving.

Re: vr4 question

Doubt it. With cruise on, it's just like giving it gas, the car is still being fed enough fuel not to die. But when it goes to idle, it dies...

Plus this started right after work was done on teh fuel filter, where she probably unplugged the MAS and removed the y-pipe for extra room. So it makes sense that it is probably just something not put properly back together on the intake end of things.

Re: vr4 question

No.. It did it for 2 days before i touched the fuel filter. I did the fuel filter to see if it would fix it. The mas is connected like it should be? Me and 3 friends looked over it today. Where is a control module, someone said it might be that????

Re: vr4 question

control module? You mean the ECU? While the caps on teh ECUs do go bad on the first gens, this doesn't sound like the symptoms.

Seriously, if i had a dime for everytime somebody suggested the ECU as the source of any car problem, I'd own a 2nd vr4. I don't know why people jump to one of the most expensive parts on the car whenever something goes wrong.

I REALLY think this is an intake leak. Check your y-pipe, intercooler piping, MAS plug, all the intake piping from the filter to the throttle body. I really think your problem lies there.

Re: vr4 question

I checked over all the plugs and wiring everything is connected. Could it be a mass air inflow sensor or something???

Re: vr4 question

It could be, but not likely.
Do you have an K&N or open element filter. Did you recently reoil it?

Have you checked your intake piping yet. I swear I think this is your problem. A crack in the y-pipe or a loose fitting...

Re: vr4 question

Yes , well I put a k and n filter on it about 3 weeks ago. Just the filter. I have looked down the y pipe everything looks connected, i do not see any leaks or craks.

Re: vr4 question

Did you oil the filter when you put it on, because that could lead to MAS problems if you over oiled it. Also did you do any damage to the mesh screen part of the MAS unit, while installing the K&N?
You could try to find a local member near you either on here or 3si that would be willing to let you swap MAS to see if that is the problem.

I would suggest more than just a once look-over of the intake piping. Generally most leaks/cracks aren't blatantly obvious. I'd pressure test, or at least go in for a closer look but that is just me.

Re: vr4 question

I understand that you put the K&N on, but please read my post and answer the questions I'm asking.

Did you oil the filter when you put it on?
Is it possible you did damage to the metal honeycomb part of the MAS unit when you put it on?

If it were misfiring I would think you would get a Check Engine Light.
