94 Camry will not start HELP!

I have a 1994 that just had some major service work (120,000 mile maintainence). I did the following: Replace timing belt, water pump, drive belts, all seals, valve cover gasket, flushed the radiator, new radiator hoses. Since the maintainence was done, when I start the car and it the engine is warm, the RPMs will dip to about 500, but will not stall. Today I started the call with the engine warm and it just died. The radio, windows, lights, work. The car will not crank at all. I had it towed to the dealership and they will run codes tomorrow. What can I expect? I really need help!

Thanks,

Re: 94 Camry will not start HELP!

Did you download the 94 factory maintenance manual at the top of the forum? Did you type "camry start" and variations in the search block at the top of the forum? Did you look in Camry FAQs at the top of the forum. There's a section on starting problems there. Autozone.com has their version of maintenance manuals for a 94 Camry.

<Not cranking> Do you hear a click when you turn the key? Yes - verify 12 volts DC at the starter then change the contacts or the starter. No - replace or swap the starter relay. Still no? Check for 12VDC at the relay coming from the ignition switch via the neutral start switch. Have the battery load tested.

<Low RPM stalling> Is the timing set correctly? Did you tighten the distributor lock bolt? Is the air inlet control valve functioning? Can you hear the fuel pump? Get a check engine light?

What will you get from the dealer? A 50-50 chance everything is fixed and a bill. Sure wish you came here first before marching to the dealer.

check the starter or the battery. Also, check to see that those idiots didn't mess up the firing order when they put back the plug wires-if the starter turns). Those are the ony few things i can think of. these are the major/general things that can go wrong.

Maybe your throttle body is still dirty cause they did not clean that? This causes more problems than you might believe. Try cleaning the butterfly inside the TBI and the idle air control too, this might be the casue of or aggravate the problem.

Also Tdm, i think maybe the timing belt may have got replaced in a way that it is off just a tooth or two. None of the other items you mentioned, would cause the starting problem.

I havent done mine V6 Cam yet but ive done others. And due to the angle you have to look at the front of engine, its not all that wasy to see the marks, which have to be dead-on when the T belt's replaced...also i noticed theres some funny marks and indentation on the crankshaft gear and this can cause confusion i think - maybe its time to recheck the marks. Mark em good with white-out or white paint to help aligning them.
