Re: Using Pencils
Go to your county Library.
Check out the books by Lee Hammond. Check out Secrets to Drawing Realistic Faces: Books: Carrie Stuart Parks. The books aren't about drawing cars but the same techniques apply. Check these sites out. http://www.sibleyfineart.com/index.htm?tipsndx.htm Go to studio tips http://monologues.co.uk/Portraits/Index.html scroll to Jimmy and run through the tutorials. PS: You don't really need all those pencils. I only use 2h-2b

Re: Using Pencils
pencil is the simpliest tool, the basic. But there are many tecniques, and its impossible to talk about them all as "tips" in one thread. The best would be is if you just practiced as much as possible!
Im in an arts uni and we have been drawing pencil (still life, portraits ) for 2 years now, and im not good ("not good yet" i hope), just need to practice more. Try to draw less from photos and more from still life, i know its difficult when it comes to cars though. Dont know anybody who has a Ferrari and would let me sit next to it and draw it for 30 hours hehe would be nice though.anyway, harder pencil - more clear and lighter lines softer - darker and less detailed.. and HB being a compromise.

+1 but sometimes i also use harder ones for fine details or tone, or softer for some really dark bits. you dont need that at the beginning though. All you need is HB and B1. Jin

Re: Using Pencils
I personally think it depends on the artist and their drawing style. I might use one pencil for one thing and someone else might use a different pencil to do the same thing.

Re: Using Pencils
i'm the one who uses 4h for the outline. it gives me really sharp and clean lines. 4 b is about the darkest i use.

Re: Using Pencils
See, NewCarDrawing uses a 4H for an outline and I us a 2H for an outline. There is no rule on what pencil to use for what so just draw alot and see what suits your style and feels the most comfortable to you.
