theft light question,
greetz,
I have a 1997 Grand Am with a 2.4, the engine that was in it threw a rod bearing, so I found an engine in the paper, and installed that one. I had installed a different Grand AM engine before and no problems. So having been down this road before, but I can figure this theft light out, I know that if you leave the ignition on for 10 minutes the light is supposed to go out. and once running you can do the cut the yellow wire hack. But I have tried to let it set for 10 minutes, and tried to start and nothing, tried waiting 10 minutes and then switching off for 30 seconds, and then trying to start the car. I have done this progression several times, to no joy! I spray ether into the carb so I know it should at least fire, .... but nothing. Here's the 100,000 dollar question.. Does the theft light go out before you can start the car? Does it go out after 10 minutes?do you need to shut it off between tried to start? Thanks for any reply! Ken |

Re: theft light question,
it's your key, you need to go to the delearship and get a new key, because you prolly bought the car at some kind of second hand place, and i don't know why but mine and my friends car both do the same thing it has the security light that comes on, and if you don't get it just right the car has to sit for 10 minutes, if you try to tuch anything while it's blinking it's just going to reset, so just wait the 10 minutes, and see if you cant get a diffrent key i don't have a key but maybe someone will post a pic of their key so you can see what it should look like

Re: theft light question,
Might be the cause.
Its strange, I drove the car into the garage, the engine still ran but it had a rod bearing hammering. The car had never given a hint of the theft system problem. I think I need to verify that I'm getting spark by getting some plug wires and test out the spark. Like its explained in other posts. I changed out the cam sensor/crank sensor/coil assembly/fuel injectors, from the engine that was running. And not getting any hint of the engine trying to start. I just need to verify that its getting spark. I did the 30 minute reset of the theft system outlined by other posts, 10 minutes on 10sec off 10mintes on 10sec off 10minutes on start the damn car... to no joy, I was sure it was the theft system but now I'm unsure. Re: theft light question,
im pretty sure it is the key though, because i had numerous people tell me that it was the key, because when you start the car and you don't leave it turned long enough then it won't start then the security light will come on.

Re: theft light question,
no the 100k$ question is why they screwed around and put a theft deturent on a POS GAs and it gets all screwy, but not on thier more expensive vehicles
Found this little thingy, GM Passlock II Data Bus override module
