Cool 92 Grand AM SE gave up the ghost on the HWY

Hello,

I am the owner of a 92 Grand AM SE, with a 2.3L Quad OHC engine. It has an auto tranny. The car has 149K miles on it. I bought with a tail light warranty just last week. This is the car my 16 year old <gulp> daughter drives. Just two days ago, she was driving into work, and the car just up and died while cruising along at highway speed. I went to pick the car up, and it would only turn over, with no firing. However, I could smell gasoline, as a car would smell after it was "flooded". Matter of fact, as it sits in the garage, I can still smell it, after towing it back home.

When the key is in the start position, the following lights activate:
  • service engine light is on, which leads me to believe the computer is getting brain sensed.
  • oil light
  • battery
  • temp
  • gear indicator on the shift console
  • interior lights
Any thoughts, comments, or perusings are appreciated.
Thanks!

Check to see if the timing chain has broken. It sounds like the fuel pump is working but it is not firing. You also should check under the hood to see if there is a fuel leak somewhere. A strong fuel smell may indicate a leak. You also need to see if there is any spark. If not you need to investigate why. It could be due to timing, bad crank position sensor, bad cam sensor or bad ignition module.

Welcome to AF!

Re: 92 Grand AM SE gave up the ghost on the HWY

Hey Gang,

Here is a follow up post to the problem on the Grand Am. After putting the car up on ramps, gasoline began to dribble out on the driver side, front tire. I removed the air filter cover and voila!, it was full of gasoline. After fiddling around, I removed the fuel regulator vacuum hose and turned the car over. It spewed forth a stream of gasoline. I drained the gas from the air filter housing, purchased and replaced the fuel regulator. Hit the key and the car started right up. Thought I'd post the fix, for any future references.

Thanks - Chris
