Exclamation Rough Idle and Surging

PLEASE HELP!! I am a college student whom was recently on my way home from work when suddenly my '95 Aurora began to shake around 40-45 mph. When I slowed down up the road at a stop light I noticed a terribly rough idle in the car that wasn't occuring earlier in the day. After getting it past 50, surging stops, but then around hitting 60 the car lunges. At start up now, it idles around 800rpm and shakes almost violently as well as smoking from the passenger side under the wheel base and door, like other people have said it seems as if the car is choking itself. It distinctly smells like oil. I recently had the EGR valve replaced due to a stalling problem about 4 months ago and the fuel rail recall was performed immediately after I received the recall notice. My father and I think it may be the vacuum lines or the O2 sensors. There is no Check Engine Light or SES Light on so I can't get diagnostics run to spit out a code. Any suggestions as to what it could be causing the idle and surgeing problems?

Re: Rough Idle and Surging

EGR malfunctions are noticable at idle but not while the throttle is open.

simple things first-
check all vacuum lines - especially at the rubber PCV valve elbows
check all sensor connectors
be sure intake bolts are snugged down - they tend to loosen up over time
replace PCV valve

check the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail - pull the sigle vac line off and see if it is wet/damp with gas - this is likely your problem but check all the above first.

Re: Rough Idle and Surging

If the vac line is damp what needs to be done about it? Does it need to be replaced or refitted?

Re: Rough Idle and Surging

I checked the line and it is not damp or wet...but as I was checking this I noticed that one of the hoses was split and cracked at the end. The hose in question is connected to a clear longer hose connected to the oil reservoir in the front. The cracked hose is a small L-shape. What hose is this? I've tried looking for engine diagrams online and can't find anything for the Aurora.
